Colin , glad your Mom is on the mend.
I have been going thru a bit of that with my Mom the past year, with her falls and broken hip etc. All we can do is show them our love and appreciation. We finally got my Mom in a Nursing home 2 weeks ago and she loves it, since she is such a people person. We are going down to stay the weekend with her and of course this Sunday is Mother's Day so we have to try and make it extra special.
