what are these oil for??

Hello Guys,

Here comes a newbie question..

I am about to do my 96000km maintainence and I have been told that I need to flush some oil in my G35 Coupe..

My question is.. can anybody tell me waht each oil is for?
And also.. due to my monthly budget concer, I may not be able to flush all the oil at once.. so can someone prioritize the importance of each oil so that I know which one to flush first...

Tranmission oil
radiator oil
rear diffusal oil
break oil
power steering oil

Thank you guys in advance...

It's somewhat difficult not knowing the previous (if any) service performed on these fluids. However here's my suggestions with regard to the 96K Infiniti preferred maintenance schedule in order of priority :

Transmission fluid (suggest a full flush not just fluid replacement -breaks down with heat and metal wear)

Rear Differential fluid (not in schedule- mistake in manual- should very 2 years or 48K- old fluid breaks down with heat and metal filings from gears)

Brake fluid (not on schedule) but should be done every 2 years to remove moisture in braking system
Power steering fluid (not on the Infiniti schedule and not critical for now- old fluid breaks down with wear and heat)

Radiator coolant (mistake in manual- car has 5 year fluid- possibly wait another year or so unless stealer suggests mileage dictates a change)

Good luck.

Thanks a bunch RBull.. its surprising to know that there are so many fluid changes taht are not listed in manual (what's a manual for?)

so here comes another even more newbie question..

regarding the tranmission oil change, what's the difference between "full flush" and "flush replacement"? How much (in CAD $) am I looking at to do a full flush for tramission oil?!?!

RE trans flush vs. replace: There is a lot of transmission fluid in the torque converter that will not get changed with a transmission drain and fill. A flush pumps all of the old stuff out and ensures all the fluid is new. $$ ?? I have an MT.

Engine decarbonization isn't related to the transmission. They will most likely be putting in an additive in your gas to help break down any carbon deposits or dirt in the fuel system....or they may just be referring to a proper fuel injection cleaning. Not a bad idea if it hasn't yet been done on the car.

FWIW, I think a flush usually replaces 1/2 the volume of the fluid. So you have a mixture of new and old sheet. You can go to a transmission place and they may charge you 80 - 120 dollars for the labour and you will pay the cost of the fluid. Use the recommended fluid. It's expensive but it is formulated to work in our cars ( that's the story and it seems to be true, J matic I think.)
I went to a Mr. lube and had them put in one more L than acutal capacity for the system to make sure it was all replaced. Someone is selling some Jmatic in the marketplace I seem to recall.

Sam, I think you mean a replace. A flush should replace all of the fluid.

You should be right Deane. When I inquired of the dealereship the cost of a flush they quoted me a price that included only half of the required Jmatic.
that's when I started to inquire at Transmission places. Seems the only thing that is flush at the dealerships is their bank accounts.
On the other side I do suffer from OFS and could be mistaken.

Ah, found the old thread Smartidiot about flushes.
All flushes are not equal.

Haha, on the OFS. I'm getting there myself. I can't argue about the stealer flush. They've flushed what little I had in my wallet many times.

Strange about the flushes not being equal. It seems simple enough to me that these things are supposed to vacuum out all of the fluid in the pan and the torque converter. Why else would you do them? The alternative is a simple pan drain.

Questions.. assuming you don't go to the dealership..

1. Where do you take your car to for these oil changes?
2. Do you buy/bring your own oil?

You're welcome.

Sorry I can't help with the shop. I live in the Halifax area.

I just read your other thread that someone got an appointment for this Saturday at Simone.
