monster oil comparison

Very informative thread.
Found this by accident. Read the first 17 pages and started to go ga ga.
Think I might start doing the Used oil thing as well.
I think I understand now how this analysis helps to tell you what is going on in the engine. I know some of you use this service as well as I've read the posts, but never really paid attention. ( )

I think people tend to over think the oil brand thing . Yes there are some oils that are slightly better . But thats just it......only slightly better . If you tracked your car or run it very hard more than not . Yes ...buy the better oils . For every day driving and as long as you change your oil regularly . Any oil is going to do just as good as the next . I do use synthetic oils because I plan on keeping the car for many years . And over the life of a motor , using syn. oils will extend that life some .

Well put Booger. The main thing is that you use a good quality oil and change it and the filter regularly. Leaving an oil in for too long can gum up a motor quick. The second thing is check your oil regularly (daily) until you get a really good feel of it's usage. The absolute worst thing you can do is run it down below two quarts. This taxes the oil that's left so bad that it breaks down in short order. Once that happens, you will use oil like a bitch and you will HAVE to check it each time you drive it.

All true stuff.

I'd be selling the car though if it ever used oil at a fraction of the rate of 2 quarts US between changes.

Nice find, Sam, thanks for the post and the link. Good confirmation for me that Amsoil was a wise choice for the VQ. And a happy accident that I'm running Castrol GTX in the wife's SUV, though I may change that to synth next time out as well.

Anyone know what type of oil Nissan dealer uses and if it's worth switching if you do regular changes?
