Cancelling cell phone contract

Cant seem to find a good answer to this anywhere, and figured somebody may know. I have a bell mobility contract that i wanted to cancel. I called them and they wanted to charge me a cancellation fee. i said id think about it, and then looked over a recent bill. i noticed they have me on a business plan for a company that I do not work for and have never worked for or heard of. Can i use that as a reason to get out of the contract(which is under my name through this company) without paying the fee? the amount is not big so i dont want to try and stick the fee on the company its through and end up paying more in the end. thanks

Sounds to me like it would be much better just to pay the small cancellation fee to Bell and forget about it.

its not a small amount, i just meant it wasnt worth trying to stick it on someone else(the business they attached me to). just wanted to know if i could use them attaching me to some company without my knowledge as a way out.

No way that's going to get you out, the business plan is most likely getting you a rate reduction and you must have signed a contract when you got the phone. In my experience it is not easy to get out of these things with out paying the cancellation fee. I thought about switching to rogers when I got my blackberry but Bell wanted $400 to cancel.

tell them you're moving out of tv country. That worked on verizon for me. I just had to show proof which consisted one photoshopping a foriegn address on to an old bank statement.

I tried that with bell, it didn't work for me. I called them and told them I was moving to SoCal and they told me that I should find a family member or friend to take over my plan.

Sounds like a good warning for people or companies entering into a contract with you.

LOL at that. You are sharp today, Deane.

I just canceled my wife's # (contract was done and her work provided a 'Berry) and have 5 months left on my own. When I canceled the wife's number, I mentioned that I 'might' be renewing my own contract. Telus now can not kiss my a$$ hard enough or fast enough. Special deals, free phone, no penalties, yadda yadda yadda.

My work is providing me a smart phone of my choice, so I'm thinking I'll see what kind of deal I can get out of Telus on that. So far I've successfully avoided the ball and chain that is a smart phone, but I fear those days are coming to a close.

I suspect that the business name on your account was done because this would get you a better deal. I've heard of companies looking at their list of registered cell phone users and finding many names they did not recognize. Highlighting that the incorrect business name on your account may end up penalizing you.

I've always (twice) had luck with finding someone to take over my plan. In fact, the last person I got to take over my plan I got via craigslist. The only thing is that Bell will check the creditworthiness of the person taking over. This deal is good for the person taking over as well as they get a shorter contract as they take over the remaining term of your plan. You could also sell this person your phone, as I did the two times I ditched my plan.

be careful with bell. they will get you even if you cancel. a friend of mine canceled his land line when his house burned down, paid the cancellation fee, six months later bell sends a collection agency for 6 months service due. again when they moved from the apt they were renting and canceled, full notification etc, paid the fee, bell's after them again.

they're nothing but a bunch of crooks. that's why i don't even have a land line any more, and won't go with dsl, because no matter what, bell still gets money.

heck, they sent a collection agency after me for 4.36$.

i have some other stories about bell being underhanded and just plain nasty.

stay away from them. if you do cancel and pay the fee, have it notarized or something.
