My son is nearing is 1st birthday and I'm thinking I want to start recording videos of him with picture quality that's better than the little vids I create on my point-and-shoot camera. I'm currently doing some research on camcorders - particularly camcorders that record in HD using hard disk drives. Pricegrabber found a price on the particular camcorder I was considering, and even after shipping and tax it is a good $100 cheaper than buying it from the local big box stores.

The low price is coming from an outfit called 1Click2Computers.com - Their sales office, at least, seems to be basesd out of Ontario.

Have any of my fellow G35driver members have ever purchased anything from this outfit?

I'm almost considering ponying up the extra $100 in exchange for the peace of mind that I can go back to a bricks and mortar location in case anything goes wrong. And this is coming from a frequent Ebay seller/buyer!

I found a few reviews of this company on RedFlagDeals.com - 2 out of 3 not so favourable. I think I'll be buying locally.

 

^good plan. Sometimes the savings just aren't worth it if a problem arises with some of these web sellers.

 

what camera and price? someone on here might know where to get it at a good price.

i find dealing with company's these days is a crapshoot. i just ordered a couple visors for a motorcycle helmet.. from a company in bc. the service is absolutely horribe. not to mention it's been 1/2 a month and i still haven't received anything yet. so much for supporting a canadian retailer

 

I think I've settled on the Sony HDR-S11. It's a 60GB HDD camcorder that shoots in full 1080 HD, and also records stills at 10.2 MP. I have a Nikon D80 so I don't really need the 10.2 MP still feature but it might come handy on the days when I don't want to lug my dSLR around and just want to take impulse pics. Anyway, the HDR-S11 has a CMOS sensor instead of using the triple CCD config that the JVC's use. The outfit I was asking about was selling it for $1181 after shipping and GST, but I found it locally at Visions Electronics for $1257 after GST (I'm in Alberta so no PST). It regularly retails for $1299. There is a 120GB model but even at 60 GB that's probably already overkill.

 

Sounds sweet but 1080P can fill up a 60GB hard drive pretty quick though; but definately still a larger capacity than the other formats available. Visions usually does a pretty good job of negotiating with prices too.

looks like it's $1,209.88 with shipping and tax to alberta. for the small difference... i would just purchase it locally in case there's something wrong and u have to take it back. nice camera.. have fun with it.

I hear ya. I'll likely be taking short snippets here and there of my son, nothing much more than that (okay, well maybe the occasional video with my buddies when he go driving through the twisties on the weekends! ). At 1080 resolution, the 60 GB hard drive can record a little over 7 hours of footage, so I think I'm good to go.

I ended up buying it yesterday. There's also a 120GB model but was fine with the 60 GB capacity of the HDR-S11. I also bought a 8 GB Memory Stick which should more than take care of my stills.
