Question Engine Bay Detailing product suggestion?

I've noticed that after years of neglect the engine bay is getting pretty dirty. Anyone have any suggestions for products for cleaning the engine bay? Or if anyone has any experience with engine bay detailers/diy, please share!

Not sure if Kevin hangs around these boards anymore..so not sure who to ask!

My friend suggested something called Gunk Citrus Degreaser for the engine bay

http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/pr...romSearch=true

From what I've read from Autopia, Citrus degreasers are the way to go.

any input would be helpful guys!

also checked out eshine, but they don't seem to have any products for cleaning engine bays.

Citrus cleaner FTW. Spray on, gentle wipe as required and light spray with rinse hose.

I was going to get a engine shampoo but I was scared to hose down my engine. Can this cause any damage?

It's no problem...
You can baggie some components if you want to,
But if you just gently flow the water on to rinse it'll be OK.

FWIW...
I just use an open ended hose (no spayer) on partial flow.
I can then control where the water goes better.

yeah, you want to avoid using the pressure washer.

unless you have some real stubborn crap. in which case protect your electrics.

i was hoping the citrus degeaser would do most of the work to loosen all the gunk, then a simple toothbrush to scrub it clean. It's lucky most of our electronics are covered up, so i don't have to worry as much about getting that stuff wet.

cover obvious areas like air filters, etc if they are exposed aftermarket type.
i like to use simple green. used them on my past maximas and civic with no issues.

I would never use a pressure washer in the engine compartment.

That will work. I use a small bristle scrub brush as well to cover more area making the job a little quicker.

I've done this numerous times for my camry and tibby. The following is a quote from the toyota forums explaining what to do and use (Canadian Tire):

" as for engine bay cleaning, buy a can of "Motomaster Orange scented engine shampoo" and another can of "Motomaster Engine Finish" both are found side by side at canadian tire. basically, with the motor off, spray the engine cleaner all over the engine bay, don't be shy, spray over any parts you wish. let soak in for 30 seconds to a minute, then hose off everything thoroughly with medium pressure hose (city pressure, not power washer). let everything dry on its own, hood up, in the sun. when dry, spray engine finish over every plastic cover and hose and parts you desire (engine finish gives it that armor all look to all your plastic and hoses).

your engine bay will look like new."
good luck!
