work related question

Hey guys,
I'm in a tight situation here, its regarding work. I've been working at a place for about 3-4 years. its my first job, got it since high school as a co op student. They paid me Okay, nothing more than what a student makes. in those 4 years, new people came and left. the company would hire people who has no experience in the field just because they could pay them less. but anyways, a year ago the company got merged and it's a pretty big company now, over 200 emplyees working in this office. I used to work 3 days for them since i had classes on other days but since i took a year off the company which took over asked if i wanted to work for those other 2 days. I accepted and they paid me well for those 2 days a week.
Since the company is merged, how can they pay me different rates? the difference is in those two days a week i'm making twice the money i make in those 3 days! ofcourse they like me so maybe thats why they pay me good but i'm not sure if this is allowed to have different wages. i been asking them to fix it and it's been running on for a year, even though they promised me they would fix it but no one has and it's been a year.
My options are now I could accept another job offer whch is a huge company all over canada, (rogers).

I love the company i work at, just i been getting pushed around for over a year for a raise. Also, those 2 days a week, i'm doing the same work as those other 3 days a week..lol...

What do you guys think i should do? accept the offer for the new job? but i feel like i'm attached to the people i work with. it's a really good job. And i luv the hours because since school is starting in sept i could work whenever i get off school.

arrghhh too much writing.head is hurting.i'll try to edit the post later to make it clear..loll

That's an interesting one but you need to clarify something. Did you actually stop working for them at some time and then start back with the two days or the the three days. Your post is not clear on that. If it's the same job and you worked there continuously I can't see why they would want to pay you different rates.

Sounds like someone goofed and starting paying you too much the other days and now they don't want to do it across the board. Or maybe you were underpaid for the 3 day shift? What company pays staff doing the same job 2-3 times the amount someone else gets let alone the same person?

You need to tread lightly if you want to try and get the raise and keep that job. Otherwise if they don't work it out to everyones satisfaction you may want to go where the grass is greener.

Honestly, it sounds like the extra pay for the additional two days was added as an incentive for you to take on more hours at work.

I've been working continuously, but everytime i get told there's lot of paperwork needs to be done and since their going public this year it's really busy etc. I mean, it only should take 5 mins to fix my wage, but they been avoiding it. I know the old CFO told me it was the law and they cant give me two wages for the same job. I mean i do the same work everyday, tech support, onfield etc. so i don't think it's really fair i'm getting two wages for doing the same work. Everytime i go try to follow up on it, i been getting told to follow up with someone else etc. it's really bothering me just because my school is gonna start in sept and i like to save some money now. Last thing i need is, for them to fix my wage when its about to go bak to school.

well i think you need to go into work tomorrow and go up to the boss and tell him or her that you want you pay fixed (in a nice way) tell them you tired of being pushed around every time you ask them to fix it. if they start to act like they are not paying attention to you. Pull out the im looking at a new job and i will not be pushed around and you want to put in your two weeks. im am sure they will fix it on next weeks pay or you will find out how they really feel. take a chance. there are a million jobs out there and i am sure you will fit right into one of them. people get pushed around at there jobs everyday that is why the rich get richer everyday because people will not stand up for them selfs. i will be waiting to find out what happend tomorrow

You have reasonable cause to ask for either a raise, or a proper full time position. You should speak to your supervisor, or person in charge, outline your values as an employee and what you have accomplished for him. Tell her/him that you believe that based on your experience, you should be offered an appropriate position, or ask for a firm timeline on when such a position would become available and whether or not you would be seriously considered for it. Do not pose this request as an ultimatum to your boss, and thank them for taking the time to listen to you.

If they aren't able to give you a position or a firm timeline, you should consider looking at employment elsewhere. But again, don't tell your boss this, as it would be considered a threat.

If as the your old boss said what they are doing is illegal, you may have recourse through labour law and get all those three day shifts retroactive. Find out, that's a bomb that's worth dropping and then leave with a pile of cash.
You might say to your new boss.
I would like my wage issue resolved before my next paycheck, please. It's not like I'm asking you to pay me the higher wage for all those three day shifts I have worked since you took over, which I may be entitled to under existing pay equity legislation. hit em where it hurts, in the pocket book.

Hey r bull i got pushed around at a old job cause i would not speak up. One day i went into work mad about something and my boss at the time started to walk over me telling me i had to work late and not get overtime. well i just freaked i told him i will not be pushed around and i wanted 3 bucks more a hour or i was walking out that night. the next day when i went in to get my last pay check there it was my raise. if i never said anything i would never have got it. like i said tell them in a nice way you want it fixed by your next pay day. tell them you have waited and been forgot about for to long. any one that stays at a job for 3-4 years the boss should take care of that person.

Thanks guys for youre input, lets leave the labour law out of this..lol...not what i would do, just my nature.
but i think it's a good idea that i need to ask them face to face. not that i havnet been doing for the last 12 months but i need to be honest, I'm happy in a way because i'm responsible for lot of stuff and i know without me, it woulnd't be easy for them.
I will talk to them on Monday, just because i likes to have a good weekend.

@simpson, I think how you were in the past is how i am right now. I could never say no and i usually just accept what comes at me. but i need to step it up. I usually stay late nights to finish my work off but i will stop doing all that bs.
thanks every1 for the advice.

M

Good for you.

There are some employers who like to to take advantage of staff. I'm not one of them.
