tolls?

well, looks like driving might get that much more expensive; montreal wants to set up tolls to pay for it's transit plan. they're talking about all the accesses to the island, and on highways in the "regions" as well.
as much as i would like to see transit improved (heck i'd be taking it if it didn't turn a ten minute drive into an hour and ten minute bus ride), i don't think making commuting that much more expensive will help, our buses are already over burdened, and won't be able to handle the extra traffic, as if gas prices weren't bad enough (yeah, it's costing me about 30$ a week more than when i got the G), it'll just put even more pressure on the public.

as many folks have been saying, they should be trimming the fat in our bloated bureaucracy before tacking on more taxes.

what do you guys think? do you deal with tolls? are they avoidable (i've seen beltways tolled before, but every single access to a city? that's a bit extreme)?

They need to do something in Montreal..... I hate driving/traffic/roads there.
The last 2 times I drove through there it was 1.5hrs to get through & that was off peak times.
A big part of the problem is that there is no (effective) way to go around.

re; tolls, they probably have been looking at the 407 here in the GTA.

tell me about it, though they're supposedly getting under way with the completion of highway 30, how many years later?

i'm like many other montrealers who would take transit if it got us where we wanted to go, in a reasonable amount of time.

No tolls here other than our two bridges. You now have to use a transponder or cash - no tokens. The bridges should have been paid for years ago but they made some bad investments way back and we're still paying for them.

they're talking about photo-tolls here, get a bill at the end of every month, bout 3$ each time you pass one. could make for a nice bill for folks who commute from off-island. (at least 60$/month, at least it's only coming on to the island, not leaving). and they're talking auto-adjusting rates too, so on smog days it'll double, snow storms too, pretty bad, esp when gas is already 1.49/l, for regular.

it's almost enough to make me wanna sell the g, take the loss, buy a beater until i get the balance paid and get a civic or something... cost of driving is getting ridiculous...

Driving through isn't that bad. It's just the same as 401 near DVP section. My biggest complaint about montreal is the roads.. very bumpy and rough. Not good for my shocks...
