Call me what you will but WTF?

Someone fill me in, what's up with these black roof overlays?

What are they for and why do such cars as Mercedes and Lexus have black roofs on lighter coloured cars?

Maybe the car was originally black and whomever painted it was too short to reach the roof?

I like them. One of the locals G drivers in the city had his roof painted and I think it looks nice:

Just a design thing, I guess, something a little different. I don't mind it but it wouldn't do much for my car.

It started with the idea of a large panoramic sunroof, which needs a black roof to complement the relatively large shade of black sunroof window. However, it seems that some aftermarket or even oem manufacturer jump into the bandwagon for black roof without the panoramic sunroof lol

That being said, I think the black roof looks awesome on light color cars, ESPECIALLY on white cars. I am in love with the black roof and pearl white body scheme on the new Merc C-class

re: the roof overlay vs painting;
I always wondered how the roof overlays stand up to repeated washing.
You'd think that the plastic would be scratched & swirl marked in no time.

...anyone seen one that's been installed for a while?

i was planning on just buying the overlay for cheap, but honestly i know ill f'k up the install process, might as well spend a bit more to get them professionally installed.

can you use window tint to do the roof overlay or do you have to buy some vinyl one from "bluebatmobile"
