As some of you may know Calgary's Race City Speedway is set to close permanently at the end of this racing season to be replaced with a water storage facility. The track's lease ran out and city council decided not to renew it. This track was one of our only sports venues that was operated with out government funding. Can't we find another place to store water?
The owner of the track is worried that taking away our only local legal drag strip is going to put 9 second civics piloted by immature drivers out on the street to race where they may kill themselves or worse yet an innocent person or family.
The operators of the track have been working hard to promote their Friday night secret street races, which used to be illegal street races, to promote safety in motor sports.
I'm planning to write a letter to my Alderman this week as I believe our Municipal government has a responsibly to the citizens of Calgary to keep racing off the streets. Furthermore, our mayor just commissioned 200 new officers to tackle the rising gang violence problem here, and I don't think the new officers should be wasted on criminal speeding investigations.

Yup. One of the key reasons people street race here in the GTA is because the strip is just too damn far.
