Canadian Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2009 F1 calendar

No F1 in the N.Amer. market

Following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Paris, France on Tuesday, the FIA announced an 18 race schedule which did not include the popular Montreal event.

Doesn't look good for the USGP to return now. It was speculated by the American commentators last year that if the USGP didn't return they would drop the Canadian GP and visa versa.

This just makes me sick!

Its a shame really. Do you feel that this is extra fall out from that last miserable USGP that was held and that racing in just Canada is simply not worth it? While I was sad that we lost our GP, I have a hard time saying that Indianapolis was a proper track for it. Do you feel that a better facility would have kept the USGP around? While I'm not saying road racing doesnt exist in America, we do seem to be going in circles alot more than other countries and alot of tracks being built around that principle. Do you think a proper GP course would/could be built knowing that?

I dont know, just some of the things I wonder about ...

The USGP was not resigned because Eccelstone refused to keep the same terms as the previous contract. The track kept a very small portion of the money on the previous contract and Bernie said NO WAY on the future contract. The tracks that host the races PAY for everything AND they don't get to keep any of the revenue from them. It's a losing game for the track and Indy refused to continue doing it. The last race there was awesome (we went) - it was the year before with the tire debacle.

I don't see any track in the US being willing to meet Bernie's terms and I also feel that is why there are so many new races - I think the other tracks are any more willing than the US tracks. I hate Bernie

The tracks don't even get any of the TV revenue - it ALL goes to the FIA.

That bites, I was honestly hoping to get out to Montreal one of these years and take in the circus. Now I guess I'll just have to go to Europe!

^ Was thinking that too.
But there's always AMLS racing... far more entertaining anyway.

Wow that's a shocker. I'm glad I went this year, definitely an experience I'll remember for a long time.

But don't forget they are adding circuits as well. There are a few cities/countries trying to get F1. Sad to see it leave N. America but all anyone cares about is NASCAR.

#1 rule in NASCAR - Don't make a right turn.

Montreal was always something I planned too.

Bernie was making a lot of noise about Montreal the last few years with the state of the track as one issue.

We'll go to the Edmonton Indy next summer too. AMLS would be great fun.

This is the worst decision by Formula One. The CGP was one of the best races in the motor racing world.

Not up here we don't.

This is a great loss, and it's clear Bernie cares more about the business than he does the history and the (dwindling) fan-base.

I think I'll get into watching Champ Car (CART/IRL).

I agree completely! He is worried about how much money HE can make not what he can do to further the sport. Apparently the FIA is fine with that and as long as Mosley is around it won't get any better - though I doubt it will either way.

i think i'll miss the circus, i've never gone to the race, but i've heard it many times. The businesses are going to miss the $100+million dollars it brings into the local economy... the list isn't "official" yet so maybe there's still a chance.

probably my favorite memory from GP weekend was walking along de maisonneuve at crescent, exotic car after exotic car smoking their tires (or trying to) around the corner, and the odd family guy with his family in his wagon/sedan/suv doing a better job of it than all the ferraris and porches...
