My parents were told by immigration and border/customs that they can provide proof that they applied for a passport, along with a drivers license.

You might want to give the crossing border a call..............

I'm in a similar situation, I need to pick up some stuff later this week or next weekend.

 

My passport expired a year ago, haven't left the country (USA or Canada) for the past 7 years and wasn't really considering one until I started picking up more parts for my car.

Enhanced DLs are read by readers and anything linked to your DL is shared with your insurance company and border officials (not to mention if it isn't in the slip cover they give you it is possible for other people to read your card), no thank you.

They might not notice for you guys, but being brown with my name is a guranteed ticket to have my car pulled over and the full ten yards of inspection .
