Sylvan Lake

I was just watching CBC and the town of Sylvan Lake in Alberta has implemented a by-law with no screaming, yelling or swearing or a person could face a fine of up to $500 dollars. Whats up with that?

I have a feeling a certain board member might respond to that.

this is another throw-away bylaw that just basically re-states existing noise by-laws and appends a fine value for enforcement. i'm sure there was already a noise by-law in place (as there is in almost every populated region) so the main purpose of this is to draw attention to the supposed noise concerns.

a fine for this would be difficult to uphold in court, unless one was being a goof and causing a lot of disturbance. in which case there would likely be corroborating evidence like complaints or witnesses. or if sound level monitors were used that would show violations. i'll assume that a max decibel level is set. if no additional evidence is provided then it's just one guy's word against another. i'm sure most complaints will be resolved with a warning, just as it is now.

Ya I am here

The law is to help curve the recent trend in Sylvan Lake of the beach front being full of drunk, cursing white trash you know the type tatoos from head to toe white sunglasses underwear hanging out of their shorts and thats the women. The major road in town Lake Shore Drive goes right past the beech and on the other side is several restraunts/bars with patios. In the summer weekends in particular the town is packed with tourists and nice cars/motor bikes come from all over to cruise the lake shore drive. The problem is everyone stops for a drink on one of the patios and often people spend the whole day drinking. It turns into a bunch of drunks hollering and swearing. There are also lots of families around due to the beach and several ice cream shops right there. So i think the problem is clear who wants to take their kids to a place like this. It has gotten worse in the past years since smoking is not allowed on patios the patrons have to go to the street to smoke and they yell back and forth between the street and the patios. The law is being enforced I have heard of people already getting tickets. It is $150 1st offence $300 2nd $500 3rd and each one after that. I think it is a good thing and I use the F bomb as a verb, noun, adjective and any other way i can fit it in a sentence. However when i am at the beach with my kids and people are running around drunk dropping F bombs with no cosideration for others I do find it offensive and I hope this helps control that a little.

Thanks for the update...sounds like Sylvan Lake is a summer hot spot sort of like Wasaga Beach here in Ontario. I agree with the potty mouth stuff some of these yahoos should realize that it is a public place and kids are around.
