Via Rail Engineers Strike July 24.

Just when we want to ride the trains and enjoy the "great way to travel" to Halifax........ .

The engineers who may go out on strike this Friday (24) have until Aug.9th to settle otherwise we have to postpone our trip or take their "alternate means of travel" ie- bus.....
--no car and no plane thanks....

I guess it could be worse and be stuck at a destination and have to take their alternate means of travel home.

Wish us luck. This is important....

That sucks Colin. I hope you guys find another comfortable way to get there.

In todays Globe and Mail :
The union's 340 engineers have been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2006. They're looking for improved wages and benefits, scheduling that allows them two consecutive days off, and increased training schedules for engineers.

“Many of the issues related to what we're trying to achieve here are quality-of-life issues,” TCRC president Dan Shewchuk said.

Edit . full story

I find it hard to support anyone who is striking for increased wages at this time. Many people including my wife and my self are accepting salary and bonus freezes to help our respective companies.
I'm not saying they don't deserve increases, I don't know what they earn or the last time they had a salary increse but now just doesn't seem like very sensible timing. They will not likely get the support of very many people. Look to Toronto for good example.

Thanks for the kind thoughts too, Paul.....I'm not insensitive to their plights, just perplexed at their timing.........
I know they're exercising their rights and they should, but striking (to me) at any time seems counterproductive at the best of times and unnecessary when mediation is or should be available, similar to the system we lived with on the Fire Department and others live with as essential services..

Indeed, to my mind and in this dodgy economy, it could be argued that all jobs are "essential" to a speedy recovery.

I feel better for having listened and said a few things but still feel badly for perhaps inconveniencing/disappointing my friends..

Let's hope there's no strike or if there is one that it's a very short one.

Cheers, everyone

Colin.

I'll definitely be crossing my fingers Colin. Whether you come in August or September, I'll be setting some time aside to spend with you and Margaret.
