QUESTION: 2 Degree Timing Advance in Calgary?
QUESTION: 2 Degree Timing Advance in Calgary?
I was wondering if there are any people that does the timing advance in Calgary? I saw that a person named Randy did this in the last Alberta Meet and Greet. I know that I could take it to the stealership to get this done, but I figure I would rather meet some fellow G-owners.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
If you want to talk about timing, there are two important factors that need to be taken into consideration... First off which motor do you have? And second, What's the highest octane available to you? And I guess the air in your area will matter too...
Because we are limited to 91 octane in my area, the advanced timing of my RevUp was actually doing more bad than good. Once I turned back the timing a bit, I was able to make more power... With a higher octane, I shouldn't have had that problem though...

I have a 2004 Automatic transmission. As for what the engine code is, I have no idea. There is 94 octane available in Calgary from Husky and Mohawk if I need to. Usually I drive on 91 octane purchased from Esso.
Randy from My350Z.com did them last meet. Maybe someone else can chime in and tell us where he lives? Seems to me he lived in Red Deer. Are you coming to the cruise on the 19th?
Unfortunately, I will be in Kelowna on the 19th for a user conference, dang it.
What are your guys' opinion on getting the timing advance done? Has it made much difference in regards to performance? Or according to dofu, it might not work out as an advantage?

Randy lives in Red Deer and goes by the screen name can350z on my350. Here's his thread about timing advance:

Dealer should do it but they will charge. See Dofu's post, though, you will need to run 92 or 94 gas to get the benefit, I believe.
People who got it at the AB meet, did you notice a difference?

Here's the snippet from the email between Randy and I:
.. All have enjoyed the increase in performance, especially after 3000 rpm. Biggest requirement is premium fuel, that's the only con if you want to call it that. Most others that I've done I have recommended at least a K&N panel air filter as the stock Nissan/Infinity paper filters are very restrictive but will work fine if you choose not to do that.
Well, after I had mine done I noticed kind of a smoother power delivery in the upper RPM's. Can't quite put my finger on it but it does SEEM 'quicker'. Don't expect anything crazy though.
The timing advance is best suited for the non-revup motor and you HAVE to use 94 octane or you're asking for trouble. Chevron and some Petro-Cans have 94. It gives around a 15-20hp bump and 10ft lbs of torque. Any tuner shop with uprev cipher software can do this for you.
STAY AWAY FROM HUSKY!!! Ethanol blended gas is bad for the sensors and eats away the hoses over time unless you have steel braided ones.

Thanks for the information MyG'n'Me, I have a couple of curious questions if you have time to answer.
Can you please explain why or how you came to this conclusion? I am curious as to why a timing advance would all of a sudden require more than 91 octane gas. What would happen if one would pump 91 octane with the timing advanced?
These are awesome figures if they hold true. Are these figures a guestimate of what you feel as the improvement, or are they based on something else?
Is Mohawk okay? In Calgary, only Husky and Mohawk have 94 octane available. Short of these 2 gas stations, I would have to get race gas. I am a big fan of Shell gas, but that's an ethanol based gas, so I am guessing that is bad as well?
Where do you pump your gas if you don't mind me asking?
