i am about to purchase a set of coupe 19's for my '04 sport sedan, lowered slightly on an '05 Z suspension. i have yet to see the rims (later today), but the owner says he took them off after 1k kms for Volks so they are in "mint" condition with ~95% rubber. $700 - assuming everything looks sweet.

i have a few questions:

1. how do i tell if the 19's have TPMS or not? the owner isn't a car guy and has no idea. he had aftermarket rims installed within 1000 kms of buying his coupe. to be honest - i don't know what they look like or where they are located either.
2. if the 19's have TPMS, do i need to do anything when i install the wheels on my car, or is it a plug-and-play deal?
3. if the 19's do not have TPMS, what are my options?
4. some people indicate that with my setup i will have rear fender rubbing issues, other people say they never had a problem except for extreme situations. what's the deal?

I can only answer #4 and that is you will have NO issues, only compliments on how flush your wheels are!! That's assuming you stick to the stock sizes or at least go no larger than 255/35 on the back. The stock 245/40s are fine but I found the front 225/40s a little narrow. I first went to 235/35s (too small) and just this week switched to 245/35s, very happy with those. Still have 245/40s on the front but will look over the winter for some 255/35s.

 

Mine was rubbing like crazy on z springs, I had to get my fenders rolled.

 

^ this is what i keep seeing - mixed reviews! i'll be sticking to the stock sizes.

anyone with input on the TPMS issue? what happens if i go without TPMS on the new rims? nothing - except that i lose that function? as long as the dash light doesn't stay on i don't really care.

Mine came without tpms but the light never comes on only after long drives on the highway.

 

^ whs; the light will definitely come on after 30 - 45 minutes.
If it bothers you..... so people have put a small piece of tape or tint over it.

 

if you run with out tpms, you will lose that function and nothing more. You may get the warning light since there is no TPMS where the ecu is looking for one. Dealer can fix this. If it does have TPMS, then the dealer can reprogram them to match your car.

even though cars are supposed to be the same... drops can vary even from the same exact setups. I would not expect any rubbing issues but if you are worried, i would get the fenders rolled just in case.

The TPMS sensors are attached to the valve stem and reside on the internal surface of the wheel (inside the tire).

If they have TPMS you will have to get them programmed for your car. I think it cost me $100 or so at Kal Tire.

As mentioned earlier, you will just have to put up with the light on your dash.

I run 245/40R19 Yokahama s.drives on all 4 corners and I have stock suspension. I have no rubbing issues whatsoever. Then again, I have a G35X so the suspension might be slightly different than a RWD sedan.

 

thanks guys. the rims probably have TPMS, but if they don't i won't sweat it. my but can tell if i've blown a donut, and i check my tires regularly anyhow.

 

my rims dont have TPMS and the light has only come on 2 or 3 times. the light turns off when you turn the car off and on.

 

When I was on stock suspension it only rubbed with people in the back. When I swapped in the z springs it started rubbing like crazy with just me in the car on bumps and even on turns.

 

Didn't 05+ Gs get TPMS standard? And since these are 19" Rays that means they have to have them....

So I THINK they have TPMS. Pretty sure though.

Just get your fenders rolled and save yourself cutting up brand new tires. Plus you might want to upgrade to new wheels in a year or something and they might be super fat!

 

If you already have TPMS on your current wheels, you should be able to just swap them into the 19s if they don't already have the sensors inside.

 

One way to tell if they have TPMS is, look at the valve stem. It should look alot bigger than your ordinary valve stem and should be all metal. Hope that helps.

 

My '04 coupe had TPMS and I'm pretty sure your '03 sedan does too.
