Unhappy I hit a car :(

Oh man, this sucks, I recently got my Nismo Bumper installed and I today I hit the persons rear bumper in front of me.

The person only had minor paint damages, and all he needed to do was to repaint it. I said lets just do cash and no insurance required.

Has any of you got into this similar type of situation? Its my first time, I'm scared he will take advantage of me paying cash. Extremely worried.

What should I do?

just give him the cash. He for sure wont want to take it to your own shop, and will go to his guy. It will most like be over priced to but theres nothing u can do about it. Either pay him or go through insurance, im sure hell b reasonable.

Same thing happened but the person hit me, i personally got the car painted from the dealership and made sure i bent the person over lol.

Do unto others.

Regardless- a buddy of mine got hit and the guy wanted to pay cash. He found the lowest quote from a friend who did that kind of work and ran with it. Cost as much as he quoted- not everyone is out there to bend people over. To be honest, to bend a guy over because he doesn't want to pay twice as mch through bs insurance increases is garbage. Hopefully not everyone out there is a douche like that.

i got hit by a woman in a mini van a few years back and she dented my bumper. it ran me 400, didnt pay for it, i went through insurance cuz i got rear ended not at fault and she didnt want to pay for a new paint job. it really depends on the car u hit. a normal paint job for a bumper is about 300 bucks.

remember, its probably the second time i'm mentioning this from another thread.... "when you go through your insurance, not only your premiums go up, the value of your car goes down because it will be on record" ... so when its time to sell it... you will have a ****load of questions to answer and ppl low balling you..... i've been there

It depends on the person. I rear ended someone once and we did though cash. I thought he was about to tell me 300 (when I heard the "th" part, but he ended up saying 30 bucks. If he tells you its gonna cost more than 3-400 you can tell him it doesnt cos that much to paint. Get quotes from several paint shops ahead of time and say these are the quotes I got. Make sure to get them from reputable shops and collision centers as well.

I had a similar situation where I was hit by someone. She wanted to keep her insurance out of the loop, so I agreed to let her pay cash. I got an estimate from the shop I wanted to use...and she wrote me a check for the amount of the estimate that I didn't cash.

When the car was done, I met her at the shop where she paid the bill and I gave her back her check. It worked out nicely for both of us. She could make sure I wasn't ripping her off with repair bills, and I was covered and could have cashed her check if she didn't show up to pay. I know accepting a personal check can be dangerous, however if you take it to a bank and have them pay it out in cash, even if the check isn't covered, you can still get your money.

I wouldn't do a check thing even if it was to hold onto. They could easily not have enough money in the account and the funds wouldn't go through should they decide to skip out on the repairs.

I also had her license plate number, driver's license number, insurance information, phone number and address just in case. It would have been pretty easy to find her in the case she didn't show.

I would have him get 2 bona fide estimates and average them so it's a better chance of being fair. If there's a huge gap with his preferred shop you may be able to negotiate something reasonable.

As you know in any event it may be preferable to a insurance claim especially on a smaller amount.

I've been the hitter in this situation. The damage was a nasty scuff and some plastic repair on a 5 series bmw. He got an estimate and I paid it. It was spot on and everything worked out better for me cause I got 5 year no claim bonus a month later. Just get all the info...the more the better.

You guys have all done the correct and smartest thing, thanks for the info, and especially t7n7, I never realized about the devalue of the car, that was a totally new insight I never thought about. *thumbs up*

on the other note, its been over a week now and the situation is behind me now, I'm not in shock anymore, and the result was that I ended up paying $500 cash (The father claimed to have estimated $400 and 2 days car rental of work @ his location of choice). Since it was my fault I didn't argue much. I went over to their house and because they treated me very nice, smiled, sat me down, invited me in for a drink and introduced their family to me, I felt safe. I made them sign a document after accepting the cash payment for my own protection and they were fine with that. I was honestly afraid they were gonna pull the "I hurt my back" and claim for a large sum of cash payout! lol

Interestingly enough, today I went to my mechanic today to install some parts..... I realized someone had a very fun time drawing lines and lines on my car with their KEY on my passenger side and rear bumper (and I JUST got my kenstyle rear installed for only a month too). I hope a pro detailer can fix this!! AHHH this just doesn't end!!

Best of luck with the repairs. Welcome to the world of car ownership - if it's not one thing it's another. Even if you fix the car yourself without insurance it can still come back to bite you. Many dealers have gauges to measure paint thickness. When you go to trade the vehicle in they will give you less for it as 'it's been in an accident'!
