Yep, it's pretty big risk you take 'fooling' the tech guys into thinking you have DRLs not to mention it's less less safe. If found out your car could be permanently taken off the road by TC.
There is nothing in HTA so I don't know if it is something police can fine you for but the Transport Canada (Federal) site says all cars after 1989 must have DRL.

FYI - insurance can be denied if in an accident. Something to ponder.

^^^ 21 years of DRLs
By that logic then we should do everything that they do or do not...I sure hope not. My parents used to say to me " if I tell your sister to go jump in a lake are you going to follow".
The simple fact is that, in adverse road and weather conditions, I can see a car with lights ON 100x easier than a car without. It's safer.

^ That's right. Many States have laws to that effect. It's nice to know that if we are ever driving in one of them that we won't get busted for not having our lights on.
Here is a little blurb from the IIHS and their research into DRL's. http://www.iihs.org/research/qanda/drl.html

Maybe some of you guys don't do enough hiway driving I am not sure how you can argue that a car is not more visible with DRL on .
I typically drive and where 75,000-100,000km/year I do about 90% hiway driving and when passing vehicles it is so much easier to spot oncoming vehicles with DRLs on even on a clear day not to mention overcast and foggy days. I do not do enough city driving to comment on how effective they are in city driving situations
How can you argue the USA not having them in case you missed it the rest of the world also switched to metric but the USA missed that one as well so by that logic we should go back to the imperial system .

IMO, The US has lots to offer Canada and the World at large. But it's a good thing we Canaucks sometimes do what we think is right and not follow Uncle Sam. Banking laws, Medicare, gun availability, and so much more. It was after importing "Republican Think Tank" ideas that we got "Attack Adds" in our politics. .....Said too much, must calm down and not follow my sister off the cliff. This way I get her room and TV.

The US is a poor example to follow as far as something being safe. Their penchant for freedom and individual rights sometimes trumps what is safer and for the common good. no helmet motorcycle and no drls, gun tolerance etc are good examples.
Motorcycle companies know DRLs are much safer having implemented them on their own 40 odd years ago. That's a pretty strong testimony to their usefulness to cars as well.

people would probably understand the benefit of DRLs if we had two way road everywhere.
i lived in a country where 95% of the roads where two way high ways, where you are facing danger everytime you are passing someone, but having their lights on campaign(shame they never made it a law there) did reduce the accident rates significantly.
I personally dont use the DRL(my car has it ) because i have my full lights on all the time, i think that is way better in terms of visibility thanks to the xenons. even in daily traffic when people dont really look behind that much, im sure i did avoid a lot of collisions this way.
i work at a bank its amazing people would spend incredible money on unnecessary personal expenses but they become so cheap for necessary stuff.
dont be cheap to save couple of bucks. it aint worth it!
