Is it just me or did gas octanes just go down? Sunoco's second highest level is now 91, I thought it used to be 92.. Pioneer Platinum is down to 91 from 93? Does this normally happen every winter?

 

It might be that the winter additives will have some effect on octane, tho I've not noticed it b4.
Let us know if you find anything out, and I'll do same.

Yeah I noticed the same thing the other day while I was filling up. I don't remember it going down to 91 at Sunoco last year during the winter, but I really don't remember!! I was thinking of checking with Sunoco, but I always forget to ask.

I'll let you know if I find out anything, if I ever remember!!

Someone asked the same question on sunoco.ca, and this is their reply:

"Thank you for your question. The octane level of our Plus did change from 89.5 to 89 and Supreme from 92 to 91. These changes will allow us to continue to offer quality fuels and competitive prices. In lowering the octane levels in these gasolines, we are not losing sight of what our customers demand from our fuels: superior and consistent quality and performance. They will continue to be blended with Ultra 94, the highest-octane fuel on the street, and we will continue to ensure that each fill-up menas a consistent level of quality."

Sounds like it is just a money grab!

I don't usually go to other stations, has anyone noticed a change at Shell/Esso/PetroCan etc?

 

I always use Ultra 94. I wish we had like 98 or 100 octane just like in europe.

No change at Petro-Can....still 87, 89, and 91 > which I use.

The octane numbers in Europe are measured by the "Research Octane Number" which usually yields significantly higher numbers. In North America, they use s system which measures

(RON + MON)/2 = Road Octane Number = Numbers you see at the station

So if you see a 98 or 100 in Europe, you're most probably looking at something around 87 or 91 in North American measurment! Nothing to really miss :-)

I've been using Sunoco Ultra 94 exclusively and just recently tried some Esso 91. From a performance perspective the car likes the 91 and I'm considering switching and saving a few bucks. I might still use 94 in the summer months when its really hot and humid just to prevent the pcm from pulling any timing.

I know this is an old post.However I came across it and wanted to ask u how u know the "car likes the 91 Esso Octane over the 94 Sunoco Octane?? haha Did the car tell u or something ? lol

 

I was at Pioneer the other day to get my usual Magnum 93 octane. I to noticed the change, however, there certainly was no change in price. Magnum is now 91 octane and called Platinum. The owner told me they no longer offer 93 octane. That was all he would say. Therefore on my next fill I decided to go to Sunoco as they offer 92 and 94 octane, [censored] Pioneer right. To my surprise no more 92 which is now 91. Of course 94 is still available. I spoke to the owner of the station. He advised me Sunoco owns close to 50% of Pioneer, therefore since Sunoco dropped their octane to 91 from 92 Pioneer had to do the same. Now it really doesn't matter what station we go to as they all offer 91. We therefore should boycott Pioneer and Sunoco!

 

I thought the manual made it very clear not to use Ethanol to fuel the G35 Coupe. Sunoco has 10% Ethanol so I don't even consider their Ultra 94 as an option.

 

Let me know if you can find fuel in Canada in the winter that isn't adjusted using booze to keep fuel lines from freezing.
