Engine Noise, Poll, & Inquiry..

How many G35coupers experience engine hissing noise/rattlling cant explain it upon almost every start up this freezing cold weather? After the engine warms up and "breaks" in after severeal minutes on this on avg -12 degree the noise goes away. Also how many of u have actually been using the Engine Block Heater? Finally how many of u had to get the seat assmbly put in b.c the seat adjusts upon acceleration/deceleration?

P.S Last but not least on my 03G35c NAVI system are there any update cd's available? Where do I get it from and is it chargeable? Too lazy to consule manuals for this now....Thanks!

I too get this horrendous squealing/hissing noise upon start up in very cold weather - can't really hear it while inside the car, but loud and clear outside. It goes away after the engine warms up, but yeah its painful to listen to.
Never used the engine block heater, and never had any problems with the seats.

Not sure, but I seem to recall a previous thread about this.

I think it has to do with timing chain clatter & is a normal
condition for the VQ35

Anyone remember this thread???

No problem with mine, it's been parked during this crappy weather.

-no noise in my G35, I do plug it in if it is going to be below -10C, it sits outside.
I did get the clatter with my 3.5 in my 02 Maxima on real cold start-ups sometimes.

I get the same noise as well...I also get some crazy groaning sounds coming from what sounds like my passenger front tire area...this goes away aswell once the car warms up. I love the car and all but there are many many bugs with it. The rattles are making me go NUTS!

There are 2 strange noises in our g's after startup , one that happens immediately after startup and lasts for a few seconds....This raspy noise is the timing chain adjuster that rattles and scrapes until it gets some oil splashed on it.
So long as it doesn't last longer than a few seconds, it's ok. All my VQ's have done this periodically, but usually happens when it's cold. (winter)

The other noise is the ABS self test that can be heard once your vehicle speed reaches an initial 3 to 4 kph. This noise isn't so raspy, but rather sounds like a momentary release of air thru a small valve, accompanied by a slight rattle.
This again is nothing to worry about, and in fact is quite normal.

I treat my engine to an hour of block heating b4 driving it every winter day. (It's garaged, but were it outside, I'd give her 2 hrs.)
I like the idea of quicker engine lubrication, along with lower idle, quicker warmup to help with warming the cabin, and slightly better gas mileage.(to help pay for the extra electricity useage.)

Updated CD's are availble from Zenrin.com , but save your money. They are very expensive, and not very different from the version you have now.
Seems it takes a number of years for significant changes in versions.
They have a website and club that you can join where you can register any errors you find. I've been there and done that but so far after sending in several changes, none have been recognized yet. (Strangely, one of the errors I mentioned is my street name (Harwood Rd.) The data fed in had it as 'Hardwood Rd'. I reported this 2 years ago, and to my knowledge, it's still Hardwood Rd. Maybe it'll be corrected in the next version. we'll see.

I'm with GSM on the block heater- my car's in the garage, and the block heater sees use every night- timer set to come on 3 hours before I unplug it to go. BTW, the garage takes a -25 night, and turns it into a -13 night for the car (several peers at work with temp guages report the same). Clear out the garage of all the junk if you haven't.
Concur that the buzz ratchet on t/o is VDC calibration- this is right in our owner's manual. Hissing when started from cold is rapid temp change for the exhaust pipes with condensation in them. All cars do it, just more noticeable in cars with less restrictive exhausts. Remember, for example, that a cat's job is to reduce emissions by igniting unburnt fuel. Catalyst. Convert.- "Help convert unburnt fuel to burnt" so in a matter of seconds, that area of the exhaust is changing temp wildly.

Hey, yeah exactly there are several bugs with our cars lets not deny that folks. Believe me they did cut corners, how else would the MSRP of our cars be better than avg. and especially the "value".
