Dealer rip off??

I ordered a black g35 coupe automatic with performance and navi.

but the dealer only gave me $5927 for my 1997 camry ce
and no other discount...wouldn't it be better if I sell it privatelly??

I think I kinda got ripped off..
Please tell me what discount you get for your g35 coupe.

Re: Dealer rip off??

You're probably better off selling private. But it's a lot more work with paperwork and all and although you'll likely get more privately you'll have to pay more taxes: When you trade in , they figure the taxes on the difference. So if you got $6k for your Camry on a trade it saved you $900 on tax so that's like getting $7k for your trade. Not sure what a 97 Camry is worth these days but maybe that extra $900 helps.

Re: Dealer rip off??

You are much better selling it privately. It's not much of a hassle, just a matter of finding a buyer. Check out autotrader.ca and look at the prices people are asking for similar cars. Not sure what province you're in, but your government's site should have more info on selling privately...

BTW, no one's getting discounts for the coupe.. well, maybe $500 or so. I think your camry is worth much more than $6-7k.

Re: Dealer rip off??

I am in Toronto area.

Will I be able to change the deal now? after I put down my deposit?
I think I would sell privatelly, that way I still have a to drive during the waiting period.

If you haven't signed anything yet then yes you can still change the deal. They made an offer if you didn't sign you haven't accepted. By saying you want more for your car you make a counteroffer which voids the original offer.

Also just for your information. I have a friend who sold her '97 cavalier for $7,000. If you can't get more than that for a Camry then something is very wrong.

Re: Dealer rip off??

I don't know about the coupe price, but the trade-in value for your 1997 Camry CE is definitly a rip off. Assuming your car is the V6 one with about 110,000 kms on it, the trade-in value should be somewhere between $7,800 -- $9,500. I'd say go back and find some excuse to renegotiate the price. It feels so good to rip dealers off for a change.

Good luck.

Re: Dealer rip off??

I made a stupid move...
1.I signed the contract and put down $1000 for deposit...
My 97 camry CE 4 cylinder has 16052 km on it though..
so maybe I am getting the right price?

2.
Right now I am most unhappy about the fact I have to give the dealer my car on Dec.10 and have to wait my car till end of Feb!
I am going to talk to the dealer tomorrow...

Re: Dealer rip off??

You should not have to hand in your car until the new one comes in...in other words you should not sign over the car until you actually start making payments on your new one....the trade in is basically a down payment and as such isn't due until your new car is in and you start making payments.

Regardless of what engine and how many miles you should be getting more than that....they quoted us a price of $5,500 on our '92 Precidia V6. I know it's a V6 but it's also 5 years older, and as I said about the Cavalier that was sold for $7,000 you can't seriously say that it's worth more than a Camry.

Also, is your car listed as a down payment on the contract? and did you actually sign anything saying that you would hand over the car on Dec. 10? even though your car is coming in in Feb?

Re: Dealer rip off??

Thanks for providing your experience with the dealers.
It helps me a lot to know what the right price the dealer should quote me.

Re: Dealer rip off??

You can't give them the car before you get your new one unless you are giving the car back to Toyota at the end of your lease, but in this case, that's ridiculous. Where are you getting the car from? I hope it's not Alta Infiniti, because there are nothing but good things from that dealership. If not, go see Mathew (sales manager) and he'll give you a good deal. Hope you can get out of your deal if you are that displeased.

Re: Dealer rip off??

Mine gave me a prelim. estimate of $7000 for my 93 Camry V6 LE. He still has to check out the car before finalising the trade in value.

BTW, anyone know any good Infinite dealers/saleman in Lower Mainland, BC? Around the Vancouver/Richmond/Burnaby area? Went to Infinite at Richmond automall and that guys sucks big time. Knew almost next to nothing about the car excepts that it sells itsef. So why the heck do I need you for?!

Re: Dealer rip off??

Good thing that you got your desposite back. I didn't check the sites today as I didn't know that you were "suppose" to hand over the car NOW and wait for your car for another 3 months. That's total nonsense btw. I traded in my jeep when I first put down the order for my G back in the late March, and didn't give them car until the day I took my delivery on late June, after I put another 10,000 kms on it.

There is a good website to check the black book value ( trade in value ) for your vehicle, I always go there via Chrysler Canada's site. So if any of you are interested to know the trade in value of your car, you might want to do the same. Always good to have that in mind, and in my case, that's how I knew I traded in my Jeep for the best price that it could get.

Here's the link: http://www.daimlerchrysler.ca/corporate/en/index.html

Just click the trade in value on the bottom left side. It's a pretty handy guide. Thanks for the tip, stalker. 8-)
