Intake and Warranty Issues

I did some reading up on air filters and their impact on warranties in the tech forums (ie inf tries to scare you, but it's up to them to prove any damage was from oem parts), but there was no real concensus.

Does anyone know what it's like here in Canada? I'm in Toronto, and bought my G with an aftermarket filter (nothing special, just a drop in replacement for the $600+ oem part), and the dealership informed me that if there's any engine problems even remotely related, it won't be warrantied.

The dealership actually said that the filter flows too much air, and can damage the intake... I don't see how increasing air flow can damage the engine, especially when the engine is sucking in the air... but regardless, I'm only concerned about the impact to warranty.

Is it just the dealership? Are there any mod friendly dealerships in the GTA (and by mod, I apparently mean air filters)... Is this really going to void my warranty? Does anyone have a relatively clean oem filter kicking around?

Thanks

I'm sure someone else can clarify the laws in Canada. In the US, we have a law which states the dealer must prove that the aftermarket modification was the direct cause of the problem to refuse warranty service for that problem. Hopefully, you have the same sort of deal up there.

I really can't see how an aftermarket intake filter would flow too much air, either.

The intake will only take in what the engine is demanding, so the tech is full of it. I had a Z-tube, K&N Hi-Flow filter and Stillen exhaust on my car until recently and the dealer/tech never made any ridiculous comments like that.
I've only heard of faulty filters causing the air flow sensor to foul up and fail, so as long as you keep it clean you shouldn't have problems.
Another issue has been with complete CAI systems causing a SES light to come on -- dealers won't touch that under warranty.

Right, in the US, it's the Magnuson-Moss act. I haven't been able to find anything relating that to Canadian laws yet. I'm sure there has to be something.

Does anyone know of any equivalent Canadian laws?

This is bugging me, because not only did I not know that it was an aftermarket filter, but also because I was planning on buying one of the amsoil filters to replace the stock one.

Sounds like it would be a good idea to get a set of parts (ie stock intake and exhaust) to share around, and only put them on the day of the visit to the dealerships.

As far as I know, there is no similar law/ruling in Canada... however many shops/dealers are aware that false claims could result in action being taken by the owner... but saying that, some still try to pull one over on unsuspecting, uninformed comsumers.
Keep in mind that most filter manufacturers are better informed about whether their part meets the auto manufacturers specs -- in case of uncertainty contact them.

No need if you get the Amsoil Ea nano fiber filter...
I just installed one & it works great.

Flows & filters better than OEM. (filtering being the key word re:warrantee)

Check it out.

I was looking at the amsoil ones as well. I went in to talk to them about it, and I think we must have gotten our signals crossed on the phone.

My situation was that a garbage no name filter had been installed, which isn't a proper oe replacement. I'm feeling better now.

And I'd also like to know where you got yours from. Did you order from them, or from a local distrib?

Amsoil Ea air filter

AMSOIL Ea Air Filters

OK guys....
I have pricing on the Amsoil Ea air filter.

I really don't want to get into a huge thing with this...
I get billed when I place the order
& I really don't want to end up with unclaimed/unpaid filters on my hands......

It will be local p/u only.
I'll take orders for ~ 2 weeks... untill May 14th.
PM me for details on cost & payment

Note: this filter fits ALL coupes & sedans with OEM air box.
.........sorry no M fitments yet

I believe that for a manufacturer to void a Warranty because aftermarket products is against the competition laws, as covered by the Combines Act in Canada.

In this respect, I believe the Combines Act is similar to the US Magnuson-Moss Act.

The only way they can refuse to warranty a claim because of the installation of an aftermarket part that conforms to the OEM spec, is if they state specifically that it must be replaced by the OEM part, and will provide said part to the consumer free of charge.

....At least that is my understanding.

Ian

I will take 1 for the coupe, and one for the 350z as well. Think they are the same filter.
