I just picked up auto detailing as one of my new hobbies, thanks to Peggy (missxhustler) motivating me to start doing it myself, instead of paying someone else to do it. I've been doing weekly hand washes, detailing the interior as well. Yesterday I washed, clay bar'd , and put on 1 coat of wax. Kind of like a mini-detail. Next time around I'll use a paint cleaner to remove minor swirls, then finish it off w/ 2 coats of wax. Also might be using a porter next time, did it by hand this time to get the basics down. I'm thinking of getting a Gialla grille just because it would be way easier to clean than the stocker. Here are some pics I took w/ my cell phone (please click to enlarge):

You said next time you might use a cleaner to remove swirls. A paint cleaner will not be effective in removing swirls as a polish is what will be needed. Of course start off with a very mild polish and only increase aggressiveness if needed.

Good job with getting into the detailing thing. I find it to be very gratifying and I really enjoy doing it myself as well.

-edit- one more thing. If you do get your PC practice as much as you can by hooking your family up with some detailing It's not like you're going to mess anything up with the PC but practice always helps.

 

Thanks! I washed w/ Meguiars wash, Meguiars claybar kit (the one that comes w/ the quick detailer), and waxed with Meguiars gold class.

Yes, I was trying to see if I could just use a cleaner instead of a polish, since my car is relatively new. (9 months) But I'd rather save time and just use a polish, so this weekend I am going to wash, clay, polish, then 1 coat of polymer sealant, followed by 1 coat of carnuaba.

One of the best hobbies I ever picked up!

I'm gonna try using a buddy's PC first before I get my own. But yes, friends and families will be getting free details for a while at least.
