Is it time to clay bar?

Hey guys, i have had the G for almost 2 years now, and the paint is starting to feel a bit rough. The car looks nice and shines when washed, but when i wax it now, it doesnt have that smooth glass feel anymore. I waxed the car this weekend and i noticed that the surface feels like very very fine grains of sand here and there, especially on the hood.

I am planning on getting the zaino package sometime soon, im just wondering if this is something claybar would fix. I mean....the car looks fine, it just doesnt feel smooth like it once did.

yes, this is what claybar is ultimately for. Removing surface contaminants. I usually clay once every 3 months with the meguires 3 step detail method.

any recommendations for a first time clay bar? never done it, and from what i understand you basically get a pice of clay and with slight force you make circular movements with water/soap lubricant over the whole car......

is it safe to use on fiberglass kits, and how much do i clay bar?....when do i know when its good?

use a silver dollar sized chunk, nead it in your hands and then spray some
detailers spray or distilled water on the panel about 12"x 12" and gently
glide the clay with light pressure. go slow. then wipe off the solution,
feel the paint with your fingers. if the surface feels fresh and smooth,
go to the adjacent 12x12 area and repeat. you can do 15x15" area
if you get comfortable but don't go too large as you don't want the
lube to air dry.

as far as clay types, try the Mother's clay first. it's harder than the
otherones but easier to use (vs Griots, etc.). Im getting my PrimaClay
this week and will see how that is vs my other clays.

after you're done, pack the remaining new clay in a ziplock and
spray a couple of mists inside the baggie to keep the clay moist.

throw out the used clay. if you drop clay while using it, toss it.

not in circular motion ... in linear motion to avoid any risks of swirling.

You can pick up clay magic or mother's clay bar @ ur local walmart / auto store. They're great products.

I used Clay Magic...the blue stuff. Works very well and can be bought for ~ $10 at the local car parts store.

Easiest way to use it is to wash the car, then afterwards, use the car soap solution and use a mitt to wipe down a panel (just as if you were washing the car again). Use that as the lube for the clay. Run the clay back and forth over that particular panel, rinse soap off, move to next panel.

IMO stuff like the Mother's package is overpriced since they include that Instant Detailer spray as their lube. Not necessary and honestly the car soap+water mix works better.

Clay bars are one of the best products made for removing the contaminants from the paint surface. After using the clay bar, I use 3M Imperial Hand Glaze and then 2 coats of carnuba wax on top. Also, Adams products are really great also. Check www.adamspolishes.com.

+1 on the clay magic. I just had it done and highspeed polished about 4 months ago, but it is time again to do it again. I will clay it this time, but the clay magic is all I used on the Cobra and it was the shiznit! You can also use an ammonia free window spray cleaner if you run out of solution.

yup claybar it ... follow the instructions some other people posted above me

its nearly impossible to mess it up, just use plenty of lube and make sure to start with a clean car, wash it first.

as long as you still have your clean coat your paint shouldn't rub off.

Otacon132, i would recommend a clay bar that's not too fine so you can take off a lot of the contaminants already on the car. i usually use a mother's clay i found to work really well for me. i've also heard of good things about the zaino clay. http://www.autopia-carcare.com/detailingclay.html http://ocdgarage.com/detailclay.html good luck.
