Basic Car Washing/Shine

Hi all,

I like a nice looking car as much (OK, in this company maybe not quite as much) as the next guy. To be honest however, I don't see myself spending hours each weekend on my car's finish/shine. So, for all of you detailing/washing/polishing gurus, what can I expect if I order the following kit from properautocare?:

http://www.properautocare.com/baresfornewc.html

I think that kit will get me a very clean, very nice looking car with about 30-45 minutes time every other week, but I really have no idea what I'm taking about. Any opinions on this product package? Thanks all!

I looked at the kit, but that one includes the clay and doesn't have the washing sponge and towels. I don't think I'll need the clay for a brand new car (at least I HOPE not).

Anyone else have opinions on the properautocare starter kit?

EMayhem -

You may want to think twice about using a Claybar. Even a new car from the dealership has impurities embedded in your paint job. I clayed my car the first weekend I received my new 04 Coupe and you would be surprised what the clay picks up. I highly recommend it.

Really? I guess I should consider it. That sucks. I was hoping to avoid having to spend 3 hours on a brand new car's finish.

Blech!

It's tough to compare directly, but as I made ref to in another thread, I bought my G and my wife bought her Accord around the same time. I went thru the whole process to Zaino my G the right way, including the clay bar. It did take a full afternoon, but a lot of that is waiting and the work was for the most part effortless. On my wife's car, I did everything but the clay bar. The difference was immense. So much so that the next app, in the fall, I clay barred her car because I felt bad that it didn't get the same level of attention. (and she busted me bad for not doing it the first time- no worries, she helped). My bro-in-law is an autobody shop owner, so I'll go with his knowledge and experience over my own. He was blown away how great a job the clay bar did, the first time he used one. He said one of the real tests of a paint job that they do in the industry is to draw the back of your fingernails gently across the surface. Every little countour (read dirt and other airborne fallout) can be felt. Your car collected a heap of this crap on the boat ride over, followed by the train and/or truck ride. After first washing the car, then thoroughly washing my car again with Dawn, we still managed to haul a pile of grime off the surface with the clay bar, on a one month old car. It's like anything, you only get out of something as much as you put in. I only see myself using the CB once a year, in the spring. For me, the clay bar was worth it.

Re: Basic Car Washing/Shine

Could you please clear something up for me...It was my understanding...that you do not wax your car for the first year due to you could harm the manuf. paint...is this correct? I would worry you are stripping your car too early and the paint will start to peel after a few years and you might get rust.

Re: Basic Car Washing/Shine

By the time the car gets to the dealership, the paint is already cured and can be clayed immediately..........however, it really isn't necessary to do so. After being painted, the vehicles get wrapped in vinyl material to protect the paint from scratches, oxidation, etc. The car can be washed, clayed, wax, whatever you like to it when you take it home from the dealership. There was sufficient time for the paint to fully dry and cure. As for early paint failure, it's quite the contrary. Waxes & Sealants are made to protect the paint from early degradation and failure.

kfloyd......wil is correct on this one... the paint is cured in the factory, plus add the 6-8 weeks that it takes to ship over here... it will be 100% cured for sure!

Re: Basic Car Washing/Shine

emayhem,

you can spend as long or as little time as you like. personally i fully detail my car 2-3 times a year, but after that, it's just quick washes/detail to get all the dirt/dust off. the quick details typically take me about 20-30 minutes. and i do those whenever i feel like it (usually once a month during the spring/summer and never during the fall/winter).

if i were to go by your numbers 45 min * 26 week, i get 19.5 hrs. but based on my experience, i'd say you probably spend closer to 1.5 hrs per session w/ that kit.

if you really want your car to look it's best, you'll need to invest the time. if you just like it nice and purty, you can spend some money and get a real detail.

Re: Basic Car Washing/Shine

Oh wonderful...You have cleared up the "mis-conception" of not waxing your car for a year. I am glad to hear that....Guess I better buy Zaino...
Thanks,
Kerry
