I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

I noticed a rather large scuff (1"x2")on my front right bumper almost at the wheel well, almost under the car. What should I do? Cost effectively???

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

Scuffs on plastic suck. Have you tried buffing it out? I had some scuffs from getting rear-ended and they all pretty much buff out. Now if you can see the plastic has been scratched, you're out of luck.

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

Are you talking about the black plastic sill, or is yours the aero?

I would go the the polish buff route first....if the scuff is actually a scratch as well...then your probably looking at
a body shop repair to make things right...
if the scuffs not real bad and they can clean it up alittle...just let it be until you either repaint your bumper or do a mod for that area....2old4this

scratches nicks chips and such really bother the hell out of me tooo..I know what your going thru!!!!

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

Yeah I think its bad. After I got home I took a good look at it. Some is just surface, but there are about 7 to 11 deep cuts into the plastic.

Since its almost under my car, and only visable at one angle if the cars parked up hill. I'm going to try to touch it up. I have a black coupe, front bumper, no aero.

...other suggestions? I thought I was going to cry today. My baby got $&%#ed by the damn curb....

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

if you have to touch it up you'll probably have the easiest time to do so since I think black paint matches very well...just take your time and build up the paint slow....don't try to fill it in in one shot...it will just look like you gobbed it on there...
also...I find if I let the paint dry for a few hours (depending on the temp of course), you will see once the chemicals and thinners evaporate the area will settle in or shrink somewhat...then you can apply another thin coat and build on that and so on.....once you finished filling and let it dry...if you feel confident try using a fine wet/dry sandpaper like 3M 1500 or 2000 grit...and lightly wet sand the area to smooth out the finish....then you can polish...buff...and rewax the job if done correct can look brand new....I've seen it done....my friend used to restore corvettes and do alot repairs on Benz's and such....don't try this technique if you don't feel confident...its just my opinion for the fix....LOL
ps. I have found the sharp edge of a toothpick works great when apply paint to my cars surface...depending on how much area there is needed to cover....2old4this

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

All better!!! I cleaned the area really well. Sanded it from about a 50(from the curb) to a 450. Filled it with bondo. Let that dry, really well. I next day I sanded to about 1000, then cleaned again and painted. Painted again, and sanded to a 2000. Then buffed it out. After some 3M 2500, and some wax. You can't tell its there, but for a slight decrease in depth of reflection. I match the color by air brushing touch-up paint. But the depth just isn't a deep. I'm happy with the way it came out, and for 15 bucks you can't tell I even kissed a curb!

good work my man....
see with a little time and patience you can get the job done.....
as far as the color not matching texture wise...let the paint "cure" depending on the area you live in it could take a little while...then go back and give a light polish and wax again to bring out the color and smooth the surface.....
I bet you saved yourself a good amount of money......
I'm not sure but maybe your car has a clear coat as well....
if thats the case then you need to remove all the wax again and give it a couple coats of clear....re-sand once again with 2000 grit and then re-polish and wax....should come out great!!!! LOL : ) : ) 2old4this

Yes, all the paint on the G35's is clearcoat, I think it is on almost all cars nowadays!

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

I have had this very small light scuff on the rear spoiler. You can't feel it at all but it is visible if you look for it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

I have found that when there is a visible scuff with out any scratches on the surface...you can usually remove it with a real fine polish or compound....I wouldn't use compound unless its absolutely necessary..
the less use mess with the clear coat the better off you'll be...
some marks however, unless taken to a pro may not come out....
I had a scuff from a cardboard box that hit my front bumper on the highway on my old infiniti I35......even though it had no noticeable feel to the rest of the bumper....it had this "scar" is the best way to describe it....I could not remove this mark no matter what I tried....even compounds didn't work...so its a little trial and error....but stay on the practical side so you do not make the situation any worse....2old4this

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

You can see that the curve in the front bumper is smoother than normal(not as sharp), But I think it turned out great!

Re: I HAVE A SCUFF!!! HELP

I took another pic with a cloth reflecting in the back ground. You can see the spot because it doesn't reflect as clear(looks more blurred), but this is really close photo.
