Detail Help: Brake Dust.

Hey everyone...heres the story.

My father picked up a G35 on my nagging, and i made him promise to keep it looking good. Problem is, he is one of those old men everyone hates: He buys a nice car, then doesnt give a crap what it looks like. I live up in in Toronto, and I don't think he has cleaned the wheels once since january...I've been trying, but school is really taking up my time. Anywho, I am ordering some Zaino and detailing his whole car for him...the lazy bastard. Any recommendations on what to get this dust off with? Its REALLY caked on the wheels, and I hope I can get it all off.

I resent that coment about an "old man"... : ) fact is I am an older man...but I'm the opposite of your dad....I keep my car as clean as I can all year round..

You may try a good wheel cleaner.....any quality brand will work...you may have to repeat a couple times depending on how dirty the rims have gotten..

After you give them a good cleaning make sure you protect them with a quality wax....helps next time around to clean them as well....

Your a good son if you go thru these steps to keep his car clean....or do you expect to inherit this car soon?

anyway LOL with your project....2old4this

Re: Detail Help: Brake Dust.

hehe...sorry about the comment...just thought I'd toss it in :P. Thanks for the reply though...I will just go pick up some wheel cleaner then.

About the car...I just cant over how nice it is...I can't stand it looking as bad as it is right now. I picked the interior and exterior colour, so I essentialy choose what the car was going to look like. Can't stand my baby looking this bad :P.

Hopefully my dad gives it up, or at least lets me buy it when hes had enough of the G. He can go back to Camrys :P.

Yep...use Eagle One...30 seconds...then a quick rinse. It's the best thing you can do save for actually touching the rims to clean them.

Re: Detail Help: Brake Dust.

Also when he needs to change his brake pads push him to buy the EBC Greenstuff brake pads, they rock!

Thanks - Joey Avino

Re: Detail Help: Brake Dust.

Turbo,
As a fellow Canuck (Kingston, On), I feel your pain. Tough to keep stuff clean at this time of year. You may need to go over the wheels a few times to really get them clean. I'm a believer in a little more work, a little less harshness of the chemicals. I've had good results with Simple Green, which is pretty gentle on the finish, but you will need to do some scrubbing.
The real key though, is to put something on the wheels once they're clean, to shed future grime.
Big Zaino fan myself- clay bar, then one coat of Z5 and two coats of Z2 with Z6 in between is the ticket. (I did this to my new winter alloys before installation, and to my stock 18's while they're warm in the house). Brake dust will almost jump off the wheels with a spray of the hose. During the nice weather, after I've detail sprayed with Z6 the car, and the cloth has lots in it, I'll do a quick once over on the wheels (avoid any overspray, I can't imagine Z6 being good for your rotors and calipers). You can feel the difference in slickness after the Z6.
And as mentioned, though I haven't personally tried them, from all accounts, the EBC Greenstuff pads are a step up. As a longtime avid motorcycle racer, I've used EBC pads for years, and have nothing but good to say about their products.

Cheers,
Derek

Re: Detail Help: Brake Dust.

I had the same "caked-on" problem last month. I hadnt washed the car in 3 months because of the cold weather.

As soon as it became warm enough, i sprayed a little Eagle One A2Z Wheel cleaner, waited 30 seconds, then hosed off with a strong stream of water. Then the wheels were shiny and clean again!!

you may need to take a paper towel and lightly whipe off any excess scum off of the wheels, then hose-off again.

Good luck.

The next time you change your brake pads, do not get the nissan oem pads... get something like EBC pads as a couple members indicated in their above posts.

Re: Detail Help: Brake Dust.

Turbo,

I've used the Dust Stop Wheel Plates for years on various cars and trucks with no problems. The brake dust literally never makes it to the wheels. I've used them on a 626 Turbo and Dodge Durango (driven in the CO mountains) with no problems of overheating, rotor warping, etc. You might want to check them out as you'll never have to wash brake dust off again!

So, where does the dust go then, just build up inside the unit?

Re: Detail Help: Brake Dust.

I've tried Eagle One. It works pretty well. But then, so does soapy water and a sponge.

Once you've managed to get the rims clean, wax them. The wax will help keep the brake dust from eating into the finish, and also makes it easier to clean off next time.

I think the brake dust has to be on there a long time before it eats into anything, I mean like a month or more, I have never had brake dust eat into the finish on a wheel.

Exactly. Every time you rotate your tires, make sure you clean it out, 'cause its a ton!

Re: Detail Help: Brake Dust.

I also clean the inside of my wheels when washing the car, I have a neat little detail brush that gets in there and leaves them nice and clean, now the very backside I'm sure is another story!
