Orbital Polisher Size

What size (the disk diameter) Orbital Polisher should I buy? Is 5" too small? Is 10" too big? The Craftsman looks like a good value for a 7" at about $40. Is this size good?

I'm looking for something to make my wax off more enjoyable. Currently using Mequiars Gold Class and happy with it, but damn I hate wiping off the wax.

Re: Orbital Polisher Size

Anybody? Is 10" too big for things like the hood and bumpers? Is 5" too small for the big panels like trunk and sides?

Any other whammies I need to look out for going from hands to orbital?

Re: Orbital Polisher Size

I use 6-7" pads with my 6" orbital. one thing to look out for is removing the wax. when i was doing it by hand, it was really easy to get it off. with the orbital, it's been more difficult. the 6" orbital is working fine for me on the car. i don't believe i would go too big, because in some curved areas, you might splatter the wax everywhere if the pad isn't firmly pressed to the car.

Re: Orbital Polisher Size

The big ones are a bit of a pain to use, and not very good for applying the wax/polishes. Buy a 6" Porter Cable 7424 for a really useful all-round machine. You'll be glad you did!

Re: Orbital Polisher Size

6" it is! Sounds about right. But I'll most likely go for the Craftsman. Porter Cable is a little steep for me and I like the Sears value proposition. If I can find a good sale on the P/C 7424 I'll definitely go that route. Guess it's time for a little Ebaying. Thanks.

The PC is very good. Best price is usually from Coastal Tool ($119).
