Wax doesn't require pressure so using a buffer will just be a waste if that's what you want it for. It helps with correction because it provides the steady pressure and heat needed to breakdown a polish. You will probably use it about twice a year on your own car but you can polish other peoples cars to make some extra cash. At least that's what I would do.

It can be used for applying waxes and sealants. Just use a soft finishing pad and apply no pressure, just the weight of the machine and your hands.
You can use Lake Country's softest Blue Finishing Pad or their Black Finishing Pad.
It is helpful whenever you may need paint correction. Then, you'll need a good abrasive polish/compounds and a good cutting/polishing pad.
I only polish my car about 2-3 times a year, but I detail other cars on the side as a hobby/side-job.
