Is this okay for car care?
Whenever I get gas I run it through the free car wash. I take it home, I spray Windex on whatever is glass. I basically take a paper towel and use water to clean up any spots and dry it. Is that fine?
windex and paper towel on glass is fine. But a microfiber would be better and not leave lint behind.
But do not use a paper towel to wipe up water on your paint, it will leave microscratches.

The last thing you want to do is drive your car through a self automated car wash. Reason is because the GIANT sponges/soft brushes they use trap little rocks and dirt and stuff and when it wipes the car it will scratch the paint. Try taking a brand new Black car through there. After one or two washes you will see little scratches. You are better off washing it yourself or paying someone to come wash it for you.
There are those "touchless" car washes that use high pressure sprays to remove most large dirt and particles.
But back to the original question, windex is fine on glass, but keep it away from the interior of your windows if you have tint. For tinted windows, you'll need a clearer without ammonia.
And like everyone has already said, keep the paper towel away from you car's paint.
