Getting into detailing or leave it to the pros?

So with my mods pretty much done, I'm looking into just giving my car the best upkeep and maintenance possible. I've been thinking for christmas buying myself a detailing setup to use in the spring. Quality mitts and towels, porter cable, appropriate pads, polish, sealant, etc. Basically the whole shebang.

Right now I'm just using a lot of Meguires stuff and Collinite waxx, it's worked out pretty well and my car is nice and shiny all the time, but I can definitely do better with more proper equipment.

I priced it out and it's gonna cost a pretty penny to buy everything so I was wondering if anybody does all this stuff themselves as a hobby? And if they do, how do they feel about DIY as opposed to just getting a detailer and getting it done? I'd imagine even at modest rates, buying an entire setup would pay for itself in a year?? Any input?

Thanks guys.

I did it my self and as a Hobby. It was about 300 to start up to get a DA, M105/205 pads soap, cloths, mits.. then as time went on I bought some more stuff like interior cleaning things..ect. I like cleaning my car and dont mind the work.

If you dont want to do all the work then pay someone basically.

I was posting on www.meguiarsonline.com/forums and I learned lots of stuff. A nice member on that site invited me to their house so they can show me how do do things and what products will work best on my car before I buy.

I went and he was very nice, I still talk to him now for quick questions.

After you get into detailing though, every car you see you will look for defects first regardless of what type of car it is lol.

ive spent well over $1k so far in detailing supplies, but then again i do it professionally. I would say for you as a hobby its worth it if you have the time and patience. I get a lot of satisfaction from working on my car. sometimes i look at my car from a distance and compare it to an undetailed car nearby and i just think wow. so id say get some money together, shop smart and you wont be disappointed.

Well I broke down and got this combo, great price:

I did some research and HD stuff is getting some pretty good reviews, in any case it should be good enough for a beginner like me to get my feet wet. Even if I don't like the HD stuff, it'll be enough to tide me over for a year or so and I get a PC and backing plate I can use indefinitely.

The UNO stuff is pretty new so there is not a lot of reviews yet.I do all my own detailing and love to do it as when you do it yourself and it comes out great.....you just sit back and say ..........hell yes and then go and drink a few cold ones.

Let us know how you like the UNO products even if your a noob to detailing.
