Proper way to clay bar the car...?

I'm totally new to clay bars... would I do it before washing my car? Or wash after doing it? Or is even a wash required?

What processes do you guys go through?

Thanks for the advice!

Wash your car with dish soap to strip whatever's on there.
use the lube spray or soap water and go over the surface with the bar. touch the surface that you just went over and feel if the surface is glass smooth.
after you're done, wash your car. dry it. (i use the absorber) apply whatever kind of wax/polish (i use rejex, good chit)
done.

p.s.
dont use circular motions, this causes swirl marks.
back and forth strokes when claying, apply whatever and buffing.

Hey Dizz, after reading your post I had a quick question... When you say don't use circular motions it made me think what is the preferred motion to use? Is the bar rubbed/rolled over the surface of the car? Or is it dragged down a straight section of paint? Definately circular motions is out.

Thx.

Re: Proper way to clay bar the car...?

put light pressure on the clay bar against the surface that you're claying. go in a straight line.

Re: Proper way to clay bar the car...?

Hey Dizz,

When I wash my car the first time to strip whatever is on there to prep for the claybar... will I have to dry it then claybar it? Or can i go after it with it still wet? Then claybar, then wash, then dry, then wax?

Thanks!

Re: Proper way to clay bar the car...?

myself personally, I don't dry it.
I wash it with dish soap, clay while wet, wash it with car soap, dry, then rejex and finally wipe her down.

Thanks for the advice dizz,

I just claybarred the car, it's too dark to wax now, but the smoothness of the exterior is very pleasing

No worries, I hope everything works out for you.
One thing, before you wax her tomorrow, make sure she's dust free. So you should wash her again. cuz micro scratches suck.

Re: Proper way to clay bar the car...?

if you have the time, clay the whole thing if you'd like.
but definitely clay the sections that feel gritty.

Re: Proper way to clay bar the car...?

Clay the entire car and keep up with waxing it after. Make sure that you wax the car after you clay it to seal it.

Re: Proper way to clay bar the car...?

You shouldn't have to use dish soap before you clay bar because the clay will remove everything from the paint anyways, right?
