Polishing pad question. Orange pad is sort of breaking apart

I have the Edge pads in white (never use), blue (use to apply optimium sealer and to take out fine swirls at the same time), Orange to take out water spots/scratches and green (serious marring).

The orange pad is sort of chunking off on the edges. Normal? Just too abusive? Or do they get old and deteroriate? They are probably 2 years old but don't get used that much. But the orange is the most used.

I use Lake Country and no chunking so far, but I haven't used them a great many times, either. If it were me, I'd ditch the chunked pads in favour of new.

Bump for someone with Edge experience?

(btw - 25k posts, holy chit)

Once pads start falling apart or separating it's time for a new one.

I'd say that a bit of wear on the edges is normal. Big chunks falling off is not, but they do age and if they've been used and not rinsed off before storage, they can deteriorate more quickly. I usually wash/rinse them, let them dry and store in a sealed palastic bag so air can't get to them.

....^....There's a logical answer, when pads start falling apart it's time to replace em. It's possible you're doing more harm than good using old worn pads.... I've used my Griot's orange pad 4 times and washed it afterwords and it shows no sign of wear.

I agree. My spot repair pads started breaking apart and read its always safer to replace.

Are the orange pads supposed to be quite a bit firmer than the rest? That's my other gripe. I wish these were softer so I could get more pad surface on the paint.

My green pad is sorta on the firm side also.

But my blue and white pads are very soft.

In general the color usually goes from yellow, green, orange, white, blue then red (or black for some makes).

I think LC pads also come in purple. Although i believe those are wool rather than foam.

I've had to toss some LC pads, after only about 3-4 uses as well. They started to disintegrate around the velcro area... Not sure if they were defective, or I applied too much pressure or what.

^ how did you store them? They can dry out and then the separating issue starts.

I store them in a tupperware after they have dried.

I've never heard that they need to be kept moist or anything. In fact, I've heard you will get mold/mildew if they are wet once you store them.
