I have the stock 18's from the 05's 6MT included sport package. My understanding is they are coated.

I'm curious if using a synthetic wax on these wheels after washing would be bad, good or indifferent?

Reason being I'm hesitant to buy yet "another" specific product like "wheel wax". It feels like pretty soon I'll be buying "hood wax", "panel wax", "tail light cleaner", "back seat leather cleaner", "front seat leather cleaner", etc...


Yes, I did search. Even at the Meguiars forum. Didn't really see anything about it.

 

z6 works for me.... or z8.

 

I use Z2 on my rims and Z6 on my tires. Z2 is safe for any exterior surface on the car and cleans/protects the same on all of them. So when I use it I just get everything. Z6 is good to give the tires a nice shiny look, and it lasts between washes. I know a lot of folks that like wheelwax (the poorboys wheelwax actually works really well if you do go that route), but like you, I just can't bring myself to spend the money on it.

 

You can use NXT wax on wheels. There is mention of people using it on the Meguiars site. I've used it and it works fine.

I have an '05 with the stock 19" rims. I used a chrome polish and then some Wizards Polymer sealant (similar to Meguiars #20 I like to think.. jsut waiting to finish this bottle to switch to that).

I think this holds up better than a wax the the sealant is less likely to break down due the heat of the wheels. It also makes it easy to get rid of the dust and grime when you wash, and I think it does a pretty good job at repelling the brake dust.

I believe Wheel Wax is probably more along the lines of a sealant. Anyone know?

 

Yes it is. The poorboys stuff also does a good job of repelling wheel wax - the nice thing about it is if you use it you don't have to use a product like Mich. Brake dust repellant.

 

I have found the Poorboy's Wheel Sealant to be a great product that keeps the wheels looking good and well protected. My regular cleanings are almost fun because of how easy they are and how it looks like new again after each cleaning.

 

I've tried 4 types of wax, including NXT, on my wheels. It's WheelWax for me.
