Stripped Oil Pan - Any suggestions?

My girlfriend's car has a stripped oil pan, unfortunately. Sometimes she takes it into the dealership and other times her brother changes her oil so I really don't want to put the blame on the dealership.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do about the stripped oil pan? I put in a new bolt, but it's definitely the pan. I know that you can get the pan re-tapped.

I am really trying to avoid replacing the whole oil pan, if possible because I don't have all my tools up here. Has anyone had any experience with this problem or know where I can take it locally to get it re-tapped?

Thanks in advance.

Well you can retap it, but it would require a larger bolt to go in the place of the stock one. Most auto parts stores carry helicoils which are replacement threads for stripped out holes. I've used one in the past to repair a honda aluminum head that a friend tapped in the wrong location. That should hopefully help you out a bit.

retapping is usually just a quick fix. Check the scrap yards for a pan. Do it once, do it right.

Helicoil's are saviors, but you still have to tap it for the insert they supply. And you'd probably have to drop the oil pan at the same time to remove any shavings from the tap.
