Any G35 sedan owners in DFW with a Borla exhaust?
Any G35 sedan owners in DFW with a Borla exhaust?
If so, I would love to hitch a quick ride with you to see how it sounds. I've stumbled across a great deal, but want to make sure I'm going to like the sound for a daily driver.
I've done a buttload of research, but you're right, 1st hand experience is best. I found a before and after video clip with some great sound quality, but it's not .actually. exhaust note I'm worried about. I'm more worried about drone inside the cabin when cruising on the highway.
heh...ooops. yeah, I've read a ton of your posts already. It just didn't click in my head initially. I've been reading so much I guess I've been ignoring screen names. Yeah, your comments regarding the drone and putting in the magnaflow have been very helpful.
I personally love the drone (if you can really call it that) of my stock 05 at around 1500-2000 rpm. I'm just worried that it might be a little too much with the Borla. I don't think I can pass it up though...brand-new and installed for $550. So I think I'm going to go for it with your magnaflow mod as my backup if the drone is too much.

well, I pulled the trigger and had the Borla installed today. I guess I can be considered part of the old crowd at a whopping 33, as it's definitely too boomy and way too much drone below 3k rpm for daily driving. I'd rather my neighbors not be able to hear me from inside their houses when I go up my driveway incline.
That being said, I do absolutely love the sound. It's just too much though. If this wasn't a daily driver for a 30 mile commute, I'd leave it as is and just enjoy the noise. Unfortunately that's not an option though.
So Jeff, you say the Magnaflow x-resonator reduced the boomy note and drone by about 1/2? Man, I wish you lived closer so I could hitch a ride. I just want to make sure it's worth doing and that I'm not still going to end up giving my wife and 7mo old boy a headache.

I contacted Borla about this and they offered to send me a couple venturis to install just before the muffler. I figure they're free, so it's worth a shot. We'll see what happens.
Venturis?? What are those?! BTW, I did drive my 3 yo daughter around with the stock borla on. And surprisingly the wife didn't complain. But if it was loud for me, it HAD to be loud for her. She just never complained.
I'm not real sure, but it seems to be specifically to reduce back pressure. Here's the email I received back from Borla. Also, here's a link to a patent that explains the venturi a little better. http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/43...scription.html
Also, in a later email when I asked about performance. This was the reply.
I'm not excited about a decrease in performance, but it's pretty minimal, so it'll be worth it if it really takes care of the drone. Since the exhaust itself doesn't real add much of a gain in the first place, I doubt I'll notice the decrease.

What other modifications do you have? We are quite surprised at your
comments. If anything, we have had the opposite comments, the system is
not loud enough.
There is an item called a venturi that gets installed in the pipes
before the muffler. They get tack welded in side the pipe. They will
help with the drone but will not eliminate it completely. When you
switch to a performance exhaust, you will always have some form of
drone. If you would like some sent out, please provide the following:

If you send us all of the above, we will send the venturis free of

The venturis will probably cut the performance by about 1 - 2% of the
exhaust (5-7% increase in horsepower and torque).
exhaust (5-7% increase in horsepower and torque).
I wonder how much drone it will take out considering they admit it won't eliminate it? I got an increase in low end torque with my X pipe install with no loss or maybe a hp/torque gain up high. Exhaust tone got a touch higher (more coupe like).
Your solution is definately cheaper but I'm still glad I went with the resonated X. You can even by the non-ss steel version for $77 shipped + install.

here's a good explanation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venturi_effect
how I understand it is that when the exhaust is forced into a smaller portion of pipe, it naturally speeds up and the pressure increases, but since it then opens back up into a larger area, the pressure suddenly drops creating a vacuum which pulls the exhaust through even faster than it would with a completely straight pipe.
It makes sense I guess. we'll see what happens when I receive them and get them installed.

yeah, I figure it's worth a shot. I may still end up doing the Magnaflow X. I sure wouldn't mind a little extra low end torque.
who knows? Maybe I'll get lucky and the venturis will increase torque too. I guess I'll find out.
