05 G35 Sedan vs. 98 LS1 Z28

I ran into a 98 Z28 today, had exhaust and probably some other bolt ons. We were on the highway and I got into the lane next to him. Both cars are auto and we were going about 65mph, I was pacing him and I downshift to 3rd gear. I think he left it in drive, we both went WOT at about the same time although I probably got a small jump. Surprisingly, he did not pass me until 85mph and I had to hit the breaks because there was a car ahead of me. I definately caught him off gaurd but i'm sure he was surprised. He had about a half car length on me when I shut down. I would have been killed really bad if I was in 4th gear. I'm pretty sure his car didn't downshift to 2nd like it should have at 65mph... my G35 is all stock except a Z-Tube.

That's because the guy wasn't racing dude. Even a stock '98 Z28 would rape you....

I would have to agree. I've raced more than a handful of stock or mostly stock LS1 F-bodies at the track. I can usually outreact them and sometimes land a better 60 foot which gives me a decent 2 car or so head start. However, by about 60-70mph, they close in fast and then run past me at around 70mph and finish ahead of me by about 4-6 cars. If we both have the same reaction time and 60 foot, I'm toast from the get-go.

My buddies stock 99 Z28 auto ran 13.6s stock and 13.1s with longtube headers/ecu tune/intake lid. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR GM'S LS-SERIES. It is by far the best powerplant of the decade especially the 7000rpm revving 505hp LS7 used in the C6 Z06.

I've owned 2 LS1's before my G35. There's absolutely no comparison in a straight line.

I have over 150 1/4 mile passes with several different vehicles, I know when a car goes WOT trust me. 2 of my friends have 11 second LS1's so don't try to educate me on them.

I don't doubt the win, but the LS1, even in stock form is a significantly quicker car. From a roll on race that only spans 20mph, a slower car can easily win, especially if you outreact him by even .3 of a second. A 3,400lb 225-240whp car vs a 3,400lb 290-310whp car? The answer should be simple.

Um

I guess it is not unbelievable. These cars feel pretty quick through the low and mid range. 4th is a sloth gear, so downshifting was necessary.
I raced a foxbody 5.0 and beat it from a dig, so I can't pull the BS flag. I just don't race much anymore with this car. I don't feel the need to or really want to get beat. I used to look for cars that wanted to race before in the Cobra and would purposely catch up to them in order to initiate. With the sedan I feel like my ***** have been snipped.

My car was simply better geared than his for this particular race, I never said my car was faster.

AGREED 100% 20mph when you jump out on someone isn't really much of a "race" at all. Like someone else said, in a matter of 20mph....a significantly slower car can jump out, accelerate, and brake before the faster car has a chance to catch up. Glad you had fun though.

I got a slight jump, it happens at the track too all the time, it's called getting a better reaction time. I usually stage shallow anyways to get the best ET's. The LS1 got caught off gaurd anyway you look at it, of course his car is faster but the faster car doesn't always win on the street or at the track.
