My 03 5AT has never had problems pulling low/mid 2.1 60 foots on EL42s. It will barely chirp a tire at the track. The 2.1 60 foot actually feels really slow. If I could get around this damn Nissan nanny that's keeping this car from launching like it should, I know it could do a low low 2.0, maybe even a high 1.9 60 foot.

 

That's great but I don't recall that being the norm. Most people were higher than that.

 

The answer is simple, they're not very good drivers and/or their track has poor traction. Years ago when I first started racing my Maxima 5MT, I couldn't break out of the 2.3-2.4 60 foots. All I got was spin and that was launching at 1500-2000rpms. After a lot of practice, I learned how to launch the car at 4500-5000rpms and land 2.1 60 foots quite consistently. It was all about throttle modulation and a little clutch slippage. Honestly, if you can't pull at least a lower 2.2 60 foot in these cars (auto or 6MT), you really need to reconsider your launch technique. I can pull 2.1 60 foots in this car with my eyes closed. Foot on brake, mash gas to the floor, release brake 1 second later = low/mid 2.1 60 foot nearly everytime. The car jumps off the line about 10 feet, bogs down for a split second, then takes off. If I could get rid of the ECU induced bog, I know the 60 foot would drop substainally.

Right off the top of my head, I know that ChicagoX (04 G35X), BossSho (03 sedan 5AT), and Audible Mayhem (03 sedan 5AT) all pulled 2.1 60 foots with stock or mostly stock cars. They were also some of the quickest with stock and mostly stock ETs ranging from 14.2 to 14.5. My 03 5AT did 14.3s stock.

 

I, too, have pulled a 60' in the 2.1's... 2.18 to be exact. This was with only a drop in K&N and a Z-tube in an '04 X.

 

^^ I agree with all of that, but my observation is that the majority of people that are racing their 07's are getting 2.1s 60' times. What makes those people any better at launching than the people that were getting 2.4s with their 1st gens? There will always be a smaller group of people that can shave a few tenths of the 60' time than the average Joe. So, perhaps those same people will shave a few tenths off of the average Joe 2.1s of the 07s.

I'm just looking at averages. If one guy in his 04 coupe runs a 13.9, I wouldn't go around telling people that an 04 runs 13.9s. Most people ran mid to high 14's with their 1st gen cars. Some people even ran 15s. I've been to the track and seen plenty of 350z's running 15s as well. If you see all the averages go down, then you can make a call that the car's performance has improved.

For the automatic cars the torque converter stall has some effect on the 60 ft times. Also some people brake torque the car prior to launch others do the good old mash when 3rd yellow comes on. My personal experience is to preload the trans and then mash rather than simply pounding the pedal for the best 60ft. The absolute best 60ft I've ever reached with my car..which is not a G...is to actually brake and rev to the point that my rear tires were slowly spinning while I sat at the light and then essentially mash it to the floor.

If the torque converter stall is higher on the 07s or alternatively nissan matched the stall better to the torque curve on the 07s both would cause a better sixty foot. Low end torque gain is also a likely basis assuming the stall is unchanged. I am no expert so its only my theory but my belief is from my observations from running an automatic down the 1/4mi repeatedly over the past few years.

 

Coming from my 2005 Subaru, which did not like the "mash the throttle" technique, do you gradually increase throttle with these cars, or do you just put it to the floor & hold on?
