It's Formula One inspired paddle shifting...Ferrari is big on offering this on certain models as a $13,000 option...I think it's nice that car companies are trying to offer new options, but I Iike shifting with a true manual, not two little paddles...Just my opinion...

hey that pic is nothing new... basically in japan, Nissan is offering the skyline with their CVT transmission (infinite gearing - automatic). With the paddle shifters, it can simulate 7 gears, just as the Audi A4's CVT transmission can simulate 5 gears i think it was.
Thats basically what it is in a nutshell. I dont read or speak japanese, but i do remember reading/hearing about this back in january.

I agree, prefer the manual also. I drove around my bro's 330i auto around and as responsive and quick it is, the big problem is that I have to always have to look at the dash to figure out what gear the tranny;s on. With the maual I also know without looking down.

Sounds like something off the holodeck from Star Trek.
Can someone please explain what "simulating 7 gears" means? If it is infinite gearing, would the gear choices be infinite with the simluated gears being regulated by the programming?
Why doesn't Nissan offer this option here on the G's? It sounds really cool. It would be a better alternative to the 5mt.

The CVT has preset ratios where shift points are simulated. In the Audi the car is faster to let the CVT do its own math and work and not use the shift points. I also hear the audi cvt revs too high at hiway speed and has some issues. Anyone drive a Murano - I think I am in the market for one. CVT from nissan could expectedly be better than audi anything.
