Fail Safe Tranny???

Does the auto in tiptronic mode have a failsafe? I mean does it shift to the higher gear once it reds? I love the "tip" mode but I get caught shifting like a stick and it still holds the gear until it wants to shift and not when I do it.This lead me to think there is a failsafe where as it would pick the next gear up to save itself it possible or to make gobbs of more power. Any thoughts?

Don't think it is a Failsafe as you put it. More like Nissan has not programmed in the shifts to be quicker, the "G" is too new, so no one has figured out yet how to reprogram the shift points and the dealer will not do it as mandated by Corporate.

Re: Fail Safe Tranny???

There is a failsafe mode when shifting up but not the one you're thinking of. If you're slow at shifting or forget, it revs to the limiter. At something like 6600 or 6700, the engine's power, torque, and fuel are cut so that you don't over rev. It feels a little strange when it happens. Almost like it's bouncing off the limit.
Another feature of the tranny is the 'learning algorythm' which remembers how easy or how spirited you drive and teaches the tranny to either shift softly or crisply. One way to reset what's been 'learned' is to disconnect the battery for 12 full hrs. I'm not sure if this resetting affects the delay in shifting at high rpm's or not. Still a lot of mystery surrounding these things. It doesn't help that there's no info to read up on or anything much from Nissan. Just a few 'tid-bits' here and there from service personnel. If you learn anything at all from experimenting with your car, please share it with us.
None of us like the delay in shifting up that close to redline.

Re: Fail Safe Tranny???

Yes, but if I disconnect my battery for 12 hours, won't the trip computer in the nav system loose track of my fuel economy history and upcoming maintanence? Is there an alternative way of clearing the transmission's memory?

That won't work.. the AT car will still keep it's old memory. You're just moving the driver to a different transmission. Try again. I like the car I have now.

Re: Fail Safe Tranny???

Kegster, I'm not sure. But I wouldn't think you'd lose all your input into the Navi every time you disconnect the batt. Heck the techs in the shop have to disconnect that a lot when they're working on the car, not to mention a dead batt, or even replacement.
Good question tho. but I doubt it. Radio presets will go tho.
Either way no biggie, for improved shifting and better 0-60.
As soon as I get time (and decent weather) I'll try it myself.

Re: Fail Safe Tranny???

I don't think my question was really clear and thats my fault...so here goes(a clearer question that is). Porsche's "tip" will upshift for you, even if you don't, when it hits a set RPM. Does our "tip" system do the same? Porsche also has a idiot feature that won't down shift if the Revs are too high-Do we have this feature as well? I hope I can be clearer in the future sorry. Thank you for the responses.

Re: Fail Safe Tranny???

IQ9,
I understand your question. The answer is NO the trans will not upshift. The engine will bounce on the rev limiter all day long until you shift up.
Secondly, the trans has more delay during shifts under heavy/full throttle due to the engine retard that is accomplished to smooth the gear change.(driveline shock)

Re: Fail Safe Tranny???

And, because i think I totally understand your question, no the engine will not downshift into a gear that would have it above it's redline. It won't let you blow up your engine. Almost all cars, especially the ones with autosticks have this.

Re: Fail Safe Tranny???

Folks that is what I needed. THANK YOU!!!!!! I just have to word my questions better in the future. I thought it might have upshift protection but I guess not. The downshift I was pretty sure of but I have limited experience with Nissan products save for a 78 280z my father had for 2 years(78-79). He does have a 350Z now and loves it minus the damn harsh ride.
