Clutch Chatter

Please reply. I am having some seemingly excessive chatter coming from the transmission when I am in neutral. When i enage he clutch or when I am in gear, I do not seem to hear. I took it to the dealer to check out some TSB's and asked them to check it out. They came up empty. Anyone else having this issue?

Thanks.

Re: Clutch Chatter

It's a "characteristic of the G35 coupe 6mt". That's what I was told too. They told me if I don't like the noise, "just keep the clutch pressed in". WTF is that shiot?

It's probably the throw out bearing, very common with aftermarket race clutches. I just wouldn't expect a mass produced car with stock clutch to make the same noise.

Re: Clutch Chatter

It's the throwout bearing, but there is nothing defective about it. Mine has "chattered" like that since I can remember, but I recently had my clutch replaced and the throwout bearing was in great condition...just noisy.

Re: Clutch Chatter

I get the same problem with mine, however when you turn the steering wheel while it is in neutral and when the clutch is out it gets even worse.

Re: Clutch Chatter

jr,

Oh, you must have gotten one of those front-wheel drive G35 sedans. I heard that a few slipped through when they were transitioning to building G35x's.

Re: Clutch Chatter

Thanks everybody. Now I don't have to worry about taking out my nitrous kit to bring it to the dealer

Re: Clutch Chatter

malx,
since this is normal (spinning, grinding, rattling noise when idleing and clutch is let out) can you please explain what is making the noise and why it does it?
just took mine in and service dept acknowledged it wasn't normal and have scheduled to take car back 12/26 and leave it with them to investigate.
any assistance is appreciated.
thx!

Re: Clutch Chatter

Mine is the same way. After highway driving and coming to a stop in neutral it sounds like the tranny is going to fly apart with the rattling. Most times it is still noisey but not that bad. I have driven sticks for over 10 years now and this by far is the NOISIEST! Doens't seem right.
2nd gear is always a joy to shift into also. It almost grinds but just barely barely. Just not smooth at all like the rest of the gears.

Re: Clutch Chatter

Yeah it's normal don't worry about it. Mine does it too, it's really noticable when my car is in the garage because of the echo.

Thanks - Joey Avino

Re: Clutch Chatter

Yeah it feels like a click or a light grind or it hits something going into second. Sometimes second is perfect, but most of the time no.

Re: Clutch Chatter

If you want to get rid of excessive clutch chatter and are looking to upgrade, get the Exedy Hyper single plate...Supposed to eliminate "characteristic clutch noise" and has better holding power and engagement...Just an idea

Re: Clutch Chatter

i think the gear ratios are different for 2nd gear, but when you're going fast, and you get a perfect shift, 2nd gear feels so sweet. like getting launched by a slingshot.

as for the clutch, i remember someone saying they took in their clutch to get checked, and the whole thing was in pieces. they couldnt figure out how he drove it with the clutch so messed up.
