Changed rear differential fluid, SLUDGE on the megnet?
Changed rear differential fluid, SLUDGE on the megnet?
First, dear god: Please forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong area. I realize the mods will strike down with the force of 1045 elephants and move this thread at the speed of light, but please forgive me
91,000 miles on my G, and I don't think the rear differential fluid has ever been changed. I got the car at 50k, and haven't done it, and I doubt the last owner did (it was a corporate lease vehicle).
So as you probably know, attached to the drain plug is a magnet to catch any metal shavings. I could NOT believe the amount of black/gray sludge on there. I'd say it was almost 2mm thick ALL around.
Is this normal? My PLAN is to run with this fluid in for 5000 miles, and replace it again.
I will have pics soon, waiting for the camera to charge up

That being said, the fill hole is in a spot that doesn't allow you to tip the bottle downward at all, and was a HUGE pain to get it full, and included spilling some. Next time, I will get three bottles, and keep topping off the bottles to be able to fill it easily. Also, the fill isn't measured in volume: It's considered full when it starts dripping back out of the fill hole a little.

Let us know how that works out for you. Nissan/Infiniti is WAY too persistant about using that for me to be brave enough to try anything else....

Seems like most people are changing it every 30k.
