My 3rd gear keeps grinding everytime I shift to third if I'm at a high RPM. Does anyone else have this problem too? Does anyone know what I need to do to fix it? Please help. Thanks.

 

it may be your synchros....next thing you know - another gear will start to grind or the retainers will go..while driving - you may " slip / pop" out of gear.. ( not to scare you" or anything....

 

wait a second - you said HIGH rpms... are you racing? is it your timing? ( from 2 to 3 gear)?...

 

I had a post on this a while back except my problem was at low rpm's. I get 3rd gear grinding when switching from 2nd to 3rd when i do quick shifts under 2500 rpm. I raised the problem to the dealer but I coudnt duplicate it for them. It doesnt happen too often because I know how to avoid it and I have better shifting between 2500 and 3000 rpm anyway. I have never had grinding on any other gear. I own a 2003 G coupe produced middle quarter of 2002. The dealer has a record of my complaint so I only hope they consider that if my tranny goes bad after my warranty expires in 2 years.

Sounds like the common synchro problem.

Time for a new tranny from the dealer!

 

I have this issue too and 5th difficult to shift into. I'm trying to get dealer to replace my tranny, but of course i need to duplicate it..

It sucks that it doesn't happen all the time...

 

Had the same issue at High RPMs going into third. It was the worst sound and feeling Ive ever heard or felt. I took it to the dealer and they know there is a problem with the 2003 Tranny but wont recall it cause it will cost them too much money. At first they said it was my throw out bearing but when they went to replace it, they said half of third gear was missing...lol. So they replaced the whole tranny under warranty with the new model tranny (008) and haven't had a problem since.

 

Mine was grinding 2nd and 5th when it was replaced. I also have 008 which made me mad because some of the other guys in here had gotten 009 replacements.

 

geezus - any difference in 08/09 trannys? final drive? gear ratios?

 

It's just crazy that 04 and 05 G's still have this tranny problem. Why did it take 2 diffrent models to correct this problem? Hey DA MAYOR if u see this thread, please comment since u work at the dealership I take my G to. Please I dont want my warranty expiring before I get this fixed.

 

No that is all the same. The 009 is just the newer model.

 

are the motors identical for that year? just some ?'s..not trying to prove anyone wrong - thanks TT - james

 

Just bought my G and absolutely love it. I am the third owner and it has 54K. The guy I bought it from is my neighbor and an absolute stand up individual, which is why i felt comfortable buying a used sports car from him. I have this same grinding problem going into third. Except it only happens when speed shifting or popping it real quick into third. When shifting super slow and slightly pushing downward onto the stick, it does not occur. The vehicle is not under warranty , and spending the money on a new tranny is not really an option at this moment. If it is the synchro problem, how much is it to get repaired. And is this a problem in which it will get worse and more detrimental to my car it is not taken care of?
