Another 6MT Tranny question

If this is a repeat, I apologize upfront...

I am having some shift problems.

I have an '04 6MT with 2600 miles, and I have been driving heavily modified manual tranny cars for about 14 years. But, on the flip side, I don't know crap about transmissions.

My problem is that I have trouble finding the next gear. For example, if I am in 3rd gear and I hit the gas pedal hard and want to shift into 4th, about half the time the tranny seems to WANT to go into 2nd gear. I know it sounds odd but I have to physically (and mentally) put it in 4th gear. Which is fine normally but under a fast (dare I say race) condition I am not shifting nearly as fast as I should.

Am I making any sense? Has anyone else experianced this? Can there be an adjustment or maybe a part replacement that will fix this?

I was always under the impression that the tranny kind of "knew" where the next gear was and sort of "guided" the shift.

Thanks in advance,

J.

keep it simple dude, pull the shifter straight down and don't think about it.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

the 3 to 4 shift is the easiest shift to make.... just pull it straight down, and you dont even have to press the clutch pedal all the way... i can make that shift probably within .3 seconds

I think your problem is how you are holding the shift ****, you need to use your fingers and not just your palm, since its such a small/short shift, you need more control, and so thats why i use my fingers, mainly the middle and ring fingers to pull down

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

Mine behaved similarly and had to be replaced because the gears were "floating"/moving when shifting.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

orljmh,

Infiniti/Nissan is having quite a bit of trouble with the 6-speed transmissions and/or clutch components. Do a search here and on my350Z to confirm. Rumor has it that they're on the third or forth modification to the transmission. They also have a completely new clutch pedal assembly (improved pivot point, etc.) that is being installed on some cars under warranty. My recommendation... start making an issue of it now.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

Ah4ku-- What exactly did you have replaced? Was it the whole tranny or did they perform a rebuild? And I am guessing it was covered under warrenty.

To everyone else, thank you for your comments. But this isn't a "manual transmission driving" technique problem. I dont want to start the whole arrogant person bashing, but I really, really know how to drive. Like I mentioned I have been racing for almost 11 years. I know there is something not right with my tranny... I am wondering if it is similar to other 6MT problems and trying to find out what the outcome was... before I take this thing into Infiniti just to start the run-a-round process from them (Infiniti of Orlando is a bbaaaddd place).

Thanks again for taking the time to answer,
J.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

I've noticed that the shift gates are very close together. I've still got less than a thousand miles, so I just chalked up any missed shifts to my lack of experience with this particular transmission. BTW, does the problem occur when you are rapid-shifting; i.e., quickly moving from gear-to-gear without much pause?

I have been around cars my whole life and learned something to day. Great site for kids and adults...and its free.

Check out the turbocharger entry too. pretty cool.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

How about one of those guided shift plates similar to this one but perhaps designed to look similar to the shift plate in the AT...

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

The whole tranny was replaced, not a rebuid. From the invoice (their words, not mine)" CSTS TRANS Grinds When Going Into 3rd gear. Internal Synscro Failure, Binding. FI#611753 Replaced TRansmission with Updated Trans Assy. All covered under warranty. Hope this helps.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

Rain...

yes it does. The problem is most noticable when rapidly shifting. I won't kid around, nearly every shift I do is near redline. And I get up to speed quickly.

Normally, with every other car I have owned, the tach approaches the redline and I rapidly push in the clutch and very quickly shift to the next gear, and immediately release the clutch. It is all one very rapid movement, not alot of time or room for mistakes. This is the same procedure used on a 1/4mi track with newer cars.

Now imagine that you are doing this and as you quicky shift into the next gear (like from 3rd to 4th) and there is a mechanical problem preventing you from hitting 4th gear and it actually redirects you into 2nd! That is where my issues are coming from... my gas pedal foot is already expecting the RPMs to drop due to the higher gear and is flooring the gas pedal again. My clutch foot is already off the pedal because its job is done until the next shift. But then I find myself in a gear WAY to high for my condition... BOOM... rev-limiter. Bad, bad, bad.

So I am posing the question to determine if others have had this problem, and to inform people who are a bit new to driving a 6MT that it might not be their fault if there are some issues with the tranny itself.

Thanks again Ah4ku.

J.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

Thanks for the heads up. I know what you mean about hitting the wrong gear when downshifting; I've done it a few times already, but since I'm not yet running the engine hard, the engine only spiked to 5k revs. I'll keep a close eye on the shifter to see if the problem persists. I hope Nissan didn't skimp in development of the 6MT.

Re: Another 6MT Tranny question

I also have a 2004 6MT, haven't had that problem - are you "back-handing" the 3-4 shift? (wrap your palm around the left side of shifter and pull straight back) That is the recommended shift technique for the 3-4, especially for quick shifts... you'll never miss or accidentally go into 2nd.
