Have you adjusted the pins? If not, adjusting the pins will greatly reduce the throw needed to execute the shift. The lever still can move the same distance as before, but now I only have to tap the shifter backwards or forwards with my fingers to get the downshift instead having to literally grab the shifter and move forwards or backwards like a manual gearbox. Now I can come up to a turn, hit the brakes, take my right hand off the wheel, tap the shifter once or twice, and immediately put my hand back on the wheel to make the turn without any worry that the tranny isn't going to do the 4 to 2 or 5 to 3 downshift for spirited driving.

No but I get what you mean. Instead of flicking the shifter, I have to hold the shifter 1/2 way engaged and then flick it twice or whatever.

I wonder if an 05+ tcu would work in the 03-04 or if it's just reprogrammed to get the rev-matching option.

i think it's all about timing. our transmission seems to time the gap between the first down-shift command and the second down-shift command. the faster you pull on the lever and repeat, the more likely it is to downshift 2 gears. by bending the switch levers, your are preloading the switches, and the transmission reads lower gap times. same can be achieved by just being faster with slapping the gear lever. but that's just my observation.

Believe me, I tried it the way you explained. I did that for nearly 3 years and I always had about a 50/50 shot of getting the double shift I wanted. It also forced me to focus way too long on shifting it just right and holding the shifter. Now all I have to do is drop my hand off the wheel, smack the shifter twice without even hitting the stop, and then immediately put my hands back on the wheel with no fear that the tranny is only going to do a single downshift because it thought I really wanted a single downshift and not a double.

Maybe I'll make a video showing it in action.
