Build date? You need to check your VIN # as to what version you have. You have a pre 04.5 model. Nothing is wrong with your auto.

Then why does it work different than mine if we have the same build date?
Besides, the way his works does not 'seem' normal.

The 04.5 assembly must have started well after October '03 don't ya think?
Granted, the vin # tells the story but I think I am right.
If someone has the 'split' for the VIN # on 04/04.5 it would be appreciated.

I'm not sure but I think this might be a sedan thing. I think all coupes got the updated shifting from 03?

Or if you manually shift into 1st at the light, THEN you must manually upshift every gear after that.
wtf r u guys smoking? the indicator should NOT say 4th when you come to a complete stop. It should go back down to first. Also, If you switch to MM from D it will display the gear you're in unless you're in 5th which it will downshift to 4th. MM is fully manual and you WILL hit the rev limiter. It will not upshift for you and the only time it will downshift is if you are going too slow for the selected gear.

This is for a coupe. If the sedan is how you guys describe it, that's just plain retarted

I found the old post that provided all the VIN info but it is missing reference data. Maybe a mod can fix the link.

man i am confused... so basically my car starting at 4th when i shift to mm from d is normal but when i come to a complete stop it should drop to 1 while in mm right? ok so i should get it checked 'cuz when i start from a complete stop it's still on 4th and i can feel the car auto shift from 1st to 2nd when it's still displaying 4th gear and from there on it feels like i'm going too slow to still be on 4th as if i'm still on 2nd....

You need to ask someone that drives a 2003 model to be sure. I remember many discussions about the changes made, but the threads are buried, so do a search & start at the first page looking for posts in the 2004-2005 time period. I have been here a long time, remember the threads, just can't remember the details.

Early versions: In MM, the display will show "4". At a stop, you will be in 1st. It will shift automatically until you hit 4. 4 in the display represents the highest gear it will shift into. If you want 5, you have to do that.

If you go into MM and downshift it to 3 and come to a stop. Again the tranny will be in 1st but will only shift for you until 3rd gear. 4-5th have to be done by you.

That's definitely different from my 04. Mine is totally manual in MM from any gear, all the way up and all the way down. And the indicator always shows '1' at a stop for any gear. And they were built the same month?
Strange. Maybe an early 04 change, nothing to do with 04/04.5 which again I don't think was official that early but I will wait to see the VINs before passing judgment.

Now that I've driven a lot of late model cars with manumatics that automatically indicate "1" when coming to stop (i.e. making you shift every gear), I have to say I think I prefer the 03/04 sedan manumatic setup. The reason I like it is I feel like I have a few more options when it comes to the shifting. If I want to shift through all the gears, then I simply tap down on the shifter a couple times and I can shift through all the gears. If I want to keep the car in 4th around town, I simply kick the shifter over and it will lok in 4th or any gear I choose without having to change it back when I slow down. At the strip, I simply select 2 and let the car shift the 1-2 (perfect everytime) and then I take control of the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts myself since the auto tends to shift out of these gears a bit too early, hurting 1/4 mile ET and MPH.

The only thing I really miss about the 04.5 trannies is the shift speed and the rev match capability on the 05+. That's pretty sweet.

OK! so it's settled~ So basically it'll start on 4th gear no matter what, but auto shift up to 4th gear and manually shift to 5th. But if i down shift it to 2nd when i start rolling it'll auto shift to 2nd and i can manually shift it from there on. So my model cars instead of having a full manual control on mm you can set the gear to reach automatically and after that change manually ey? well thanks A LOT!!! for all your help, this really have been bugging me cuz i thought it was stuck on 4th. But as goes for fortified, that is odd though, we have the same build date but a different setup?!?!

When rolling, right?
But at a stop the indicator says '1' ?

But does it do this:

"It will shift automatically until you hit 4. 4 in the display represents the highest gear it will shift into. If you want 5, you have to do that.

If you go into MM and downshift it to 3 and come to a stop. Again the tranny will be in 1st but will only shift for you until 3rd gear. 4-5th have to be done by you."

03-04 AT sedans are designed to display 4 when you shift into manual mode, although it could be in a different gear than displayed. When you shift into manual from a stop, the tranny will actually be in 1st, although the display will show a 4. This is because the tranny will automatically shift up and down, with the highest gear being 4th. Think of it as an overdrive at this point. Once you tip the selector down into a lower gear, that gear then becomes the highest gear it will go into. So if you are at a stoplight and you shift from 4-3-2-1, the car will stay in 1st gear when you accelerate until you shift it to 2nd, then 3rd, etc. But again, if you leave it in a higher gear (lets say 3rd) and come to a stop, the indicator will show 3 and the tranny will actually be in 1st. It is not a true manumatic.

04.5 and newer AT sedans (along with G coupes, FX, EX, M, etc) are designed as true manumatics, meaning that when you shift into manual mode, the display shows the actual gear you are in. So if you shift into manual from a stop, the tranny will be in 1st and the indicator will show a 1. Once you accelerate, the tranny will stay in that gear until you upshift. If you are driving and then slow down to a certain speed, the tranny will automatically downshift and the indicator will show the lower gear as well. So if you are going 45mph in 4th gear and brake to 20 mph, the tranny and indicator will automatically downshift to 3. When you come to a stop, the indicator will show a 1 again.

1. I shift into MM while in auto and the car is moving it will indicate '4'.

2. It will always START in '1' and SHOW '1' when I come to a stop in MM. REGARDLESS of any other gear I selected before coming to a stop.

3. From a stop it will START in '1' and STAY in '1' until I upshift. It will do the same when I shift to 2, 3, 4, or 5. It will STAY in any gear I select. And AGAIN, it does not care what gear I selected before coming to a complete stop. It starts from scratch every time I stop.

It only does 2 things AUTOMATICALLY if I am in MM (1) always downshift to 1 at a stop AND (2) downshift if I am going too slow in a higher gear.

So it sounds like mine is a 04.5 but I don't think they started in production as early as Oct 03. That's what's inconsistent here I think.
