starting the car and switching gears

when you guys start the car does it rev up to almost 2000 rpm for a split second and drops back down to wherever it should be depending on weather. Well its been cold so it goes up close to 2000 rpm then drops back down to maybe 1000-1400.

Another thing.... when you driving really fast and you step the clutch in really quick (foot is not on gas) it looks as though the meter moves like 200 further up....

example... say i am switching from 3rd to 4th really fast... the meter goes up like 200 rpm and falls back down to wherever it should be. It only happens sometimes. Like its ony 4000 rpm as i step clutch in u can see it shoot up to like 4200 rpm and i know my foot is no longer on gas.

Makes sense. If you think about it, while you drive in gear the engine is under counter stress from the wheels. Once you step on the clutch you disengage the engine from the wheels hence, removing that stress which lets the engine jump a bit as it's no more "restrained" under that stress.

Re: starting the car and switching gears

I have an '03 6mt. When I start my car when cold (sitting overnight) the rpm's are around 1500, never higher, then drop to around 1,000 rpm's about 5 to 10 seconds after start up. RPM's keep falling as water temp rises, to normal idle. I try to let my car warm up. I live in L.A. so it really never gets very cold as it does in the midwest & east coast. Maybe the cold has something to do with the high rpm at startup. As for your 2nd question, I have nevered experienced that. I do douple clutch at times when upshifting and more often when downshifting. When making quick shifts when acclerating, I've never notice the rpm's rising without foot on gas pedal. Seems a little wierd, and it would really bug the sh** out of me.

My needle jumps up the way you describe it when I'm backing up for starting out in first gear and doing the whole gas/clutch thing. When I release the gas and press in the clutch, the RPM jump up a bit and then falls back down instead of dropping straight down after I let off the gas.

Does this seem like the same thing you're getting dopey?
