question about shifting on 03 sedan AT
I got question about an 03 sedan. My old man just purchased a used 03 sedan AT. now my question, when ever I or he drives the car on tiptronic, when you up shift and stop, the little screen still says the previous gear(ex. from 1 to 4th gear and stop it will still be on fourth gear) but when you accelerate from stop it will actually change gear to fourth or where ever you left off. is this normal on sedans? thanks..

I know when I stop, it automatically drops back into 1st. I'm in a coupe but the mechanics should be the same for the sedan. You say the display indicates the last gear but from a stop, I have to imagine you're back in 1st?

Easein, if yours is the 03.5, it is more like the 04's than 03's. Just like '04.5 is more like '05 than '04
You'll notice on 2003's that whenever you switch to MM (manual mode) it always displays 4th, whether you're in that gear or not. It will still shift as if in D, but when you get to the indicated gear, that gear will be held out. If you don't shift before redline in a 2003 it will shift at redline for you.
This is unlike the 04's (and 03.5); when switched over to MM, it will display the gear you are in right then, and begin to hold that gear out. If you don't shift before redline on the later models, it will bounce off the rev limiter until you do.
OP, your car is acting exactly as it's supposed to!

Normal for 03. When you go to MM, it goes to 4th. If at a light, that represents the highest gear it will shift into. Ie.. try going MM and shift into 3rd or 2nd. Then take off. Won't go any higher then your selected gear. Good for holding a gear though a corner etc.

i have 03.5 sedan, and mine does the same thing - the display shows 4th gear, even when you're stopped. the transmission will not shift past 4th gear, but will downshift - but the display does not change when it does. i have an early model 03.5 though, as it turned out - my ECU has the old-style plug.

Mine acts the way you all described the 03.5 but its the downshifting thats annoying, mine wont downshift into a gear untill a safe speed is reached for that gear.... double edged sword i guess
