Clutch pedal question/problem
Clutch pedal question/problem
I'd like some feedback on an issue I'm having with the clutch pedal.
First the issue:
Once in a great while (maybe 3-4 times this year) the clutch pedal wouldn't come up all the way. It happened rarely and the clutch engagement seemed fine, no slipping noticeable. Otherwise, day to day the clutch pedal operation was perfect and the clutch itself seemed to work fine.
I mentioned the sticking pedal to the dealership when I brought it in for service yesterday thinking the pedal itself might need lubrication or something. They found a leaking slave cylinder so replaced it under warranty.
Now the pedal has TONS more play before I feel ANY pressure on the pedal (I guess that's where it engages). I mean its about 1-1/2" of pedal travel before any pressure on the pedal, much more than before. Clutch itself still feels like it operates fine.
The pedal is worse in the morning when the car is cold (parked outside). Today, colder weather than usual for SoCal, and the pedal wouldnt come up past that point at all for the first 1/2 mile or so.
Dealership tells me the pressure plate was probably burned up, dont remember the exact term they used but had to do with uneven wear not allowing some sort of even pressure on the pedal. Sounds like BS to me since it didnt do that before they screwed with the slave cylinder.
A little history of the car:
2007 g35 6mt, about 16-18 months old. 14.7k miles. This car has two trackdays on it but I go often. I am super smooth at the track and my motto is "on the gas or on the brake, nothing in between". I'm also pretty smooth on the street too, never riding the clutch but do often sit at a light with the pedal pressed down and in gear. I do drive aggressively though. Also once, in traffic on a hill, I remember the clutch slipping and smelling bad, but only that once a few months ago.
The dealership is willing to drop the trans and look at the pressure plate but if it appears worn due to abuse I pay for it. Otherwise its a warranty repair. I dont want to take that risk, especially since they know I've been to the track (thanks to a friend who's car they also work on).
Any feedback on the pedal issue and what info I can counter the dealerships assertions with would be greatly appreciated.
