question about the X transfer case

I was talking to a friend of mine over the weekend, and he mentioned that a friend of his had an X with a AWD controller, basically a **** that would manually adjust it.

interested, i looked through the service manual and found that there is a solenoid in the case that controlls the power. its current activated, and it seems at 0A its running all the power to the rear, and at <1.6A its evenly split. anyone have any ideas on this? My idea would just be a relay that would switch between the stock controller and a manual controller, and just build a circuit that would vary the current.
